Donald:
Thanks for the info. While I'm not looking for upgrades or income makers I do appreciate the resources and will be looking into them as a possibility. Also thanks to the others for their input into this thread. Peace, Vinny |

Any of you have analized if the Return of investment of the Coloring pages worth the effort?
I offer coloring pages to every child in my shows. But the return is very low. Besides that, I invest A LOT of time on those coloring pages, because they are a A4 sheet rolled up as a tube and tied with a little bow. A LOT OF WORK!. sometimes I have 250 children in the audience and a couple of days before the show, me and my wife are rolling up the sheets. I started to do this about 2 months ago. So far, It doesn't worth it. How do you offer your coloring pages? My method takes a lot of time. Regards, Alejandro. |

Since I design my own coloring flyers and print them off on my own home printer, my cost for me is next to nothing at all. This means my ROI is substantial to say the least. Even if I book just one show from it, my profit margin becomes huge. I have booked many shows just from my designed coloring pages (which I can and have customized for events) as well as magicians assistant cerificates.
I find that for my shows, rolling them up is not necessary because 1) the cost becomes additional 2) the time to do the asembly is greater 3) the kids will take them apart immediately causing a mess on the performance area From this I decided to just keep them flat and hand them to the kids in this way. This keeps them flat, makes them easier for posting on the fridge or framing and it takes much less time on my part. I just print up a batch before my shows and I am set to go. The printer does all the work for me. Now because I have them designed myself and on my system, this also allows me to customize every flyer to the performance I am doing. Doing this gives you a much greater perceived value in the mind of the client you are working for. It does not take me long at all. I just go into my program and change a few words around and viola I am ready to print them back out again. Now I have a customized flyer that is something special to the client and the kids still want them. if anyone has any additional questions on this, I would be happy to answer them for you. My pleasure. Kyle

Now remember, I don't use a colouring / activity sheet, but rather my own activity book (about 6 double-sided pages, folded in half, making 24 pages total).
I just booked a birthday show last night, because of an activity book I gave out an event last week. This is how the customer had my name and number, and how she knew the child wanted me. So, this is an example of an ROI that I am happy with. For the past 3 or so years, I photocoped the activity book pages at a Copy Centre, and then I would staple and fold them. However, I was unhappy with the quality, plus all of the labour. I have better things to do with my time, like work on copywriting for mailings, and sending letters, etc. So, this past December I went back to what I had originally done many years ago, paying to have the books professionally printed, stapled, and folded. I'm much happier with the quality of the work. While I do admit that it cost me more, it was much less labour for me. Note - if my audience is larger than 100 people, they all don't get an activity book. I use a different giveaway, that is more cost-effective, such as a full-colour bookmark. So, that's what I would use for a school assembly, for example. I can't imagine the work that goes into rolling hundreds of items, and tying bows on them all. Wow! I was once hired by a local trick and joke shop to put together 1000 buttons, and it took forever (and for fairly low pay). I hate being part of an assembly line, unless I really love the project and consider it a fun thing to do. When it is no longer fun, it's time to try something else, or hire someone else to do it for you. - Donald

I agree with Donald. I have always tried to find ways, methods and set up systems to be able to deliver a quality product without it really tying up my time. I have developed ways and methods to save myself time and aggravation while still making sure that quality does not suffer in the process.

I give out a coloring sheet as a contest. To enter the contest the child colors the picture and mails it to me with the enter form at the bottom filled out by their parent, (name of parent, address, and childs name and birthday) I have a drawing once a month and that child wins a magic set. The magic set costs me about 10.00 dollars wholesale and looks very nice. All the entries receive a birthday card from me one month before their birthday, and their parent receives a flyer. It allows me to build a large database for leads. and more than pays for itself.

THIS IS A GREAT POST.
queation: I work mostly via agents. they don't like it that I use materials with my adresse on it. understantable. also if they do the booking they don't want the hassle of the extra work in offering the giveaways. so how do you handle these kind of situations. BTW: I do a kids show as a cowboy and give away children lasso's for the kids who help. for all the other children I have a photograph of my horse HAPPY. I tell in my show that the lasso costs €3,00 ($3,00) so the parents know they can buy one. |

I also do a coloring contest and offer it to my festival prospects and clients. It is easy for me to set up and I can customize the contest to meet their needs and out the sponsors of the festival on it as well. It works wonderfully.
The key is what Brad mentioned above. You MUST have the parent fill it out or have them place the parent's signature on it. With the way things are today, you just have to play it safe and your audience and clients will thank you for it. I try and get the parent to fill itout and I also have a place for the parent's signature as well. To answer Robert's question, I handle the situation by creating my customized materials but design them 2 ways. 1 set has my information on it and the other set has a space left blank so that I can either place the client's information on it or apply a sticker to it. As a designer, it is easy for me to get my materials and flyers created both ways. However, you can do it yourself with a few ideas that may help with your budget. 1) One method is to have your flyers designed or printed minus your contact information. You leave an area blank. Then when you have a gig etc. you set up the information in your computer and run the sheet through your printer. This way you can customize the flyer or material for yourself or for an agent with ease. 2) Another method is to have the contact information in a certain area where when printed, all you have to do is create a sticker with the agencies information and place it over top of your information. I hope some of these ideas might work for you. Let me know if I can elaborate on them for you. Kyle
