Almost 25 years ago, I bought this prop from Abbott's and it was called "Hypnotizing A Rabbit" by Ormond McGil. It is basically a bed that is angled. When a rabbit is placed on it, it makes the rabbit immobile. A quick jerk on the back of the bed will make the rabbit pop out of the bed.
I have been using this till now. Not all rabbits may be used for this effect. Only the timid ones. Size also matters. I am trying to make a device that I can place inside this prop so that I don't have to jerk the cloth in order to wake the rabbit up. IOW, I want it to be hands free to wake the rabbit up. Any ideas on this matter?

IS this a bed you plce the rabbit in? Or do you hold the rabbit in your hand?
I use to do a hypnotizing rabbit thing where you hold it by the butt, and you kinda lay him down and he will stay back. The way I got him back up was by blowing on his nose - try that. |

Yes it is a bed that is slightly angled. Hmmm, blowing on his nose? I'll try that. Thanks!

The bed does not make the rabbit immobile, placing the rabbit on his or her back and the head looking up, places the rabbit into a catatonic seizure. Jerking the bed tilts the rabbit’s head enough to the side to get the rabbit into a living mode again.
Your rabbit does not have to be “timid”, any rabbit will go into this mode when placed in this position that he or she was not meant to be in, as has been discussed here at length. In the opinion of many vets, doing this for any more than a moment or two is harmful to the rabbit. Bob |

HI,
I agree with wellington years ago the thought was that rabbits where somehow calmed by tipping on their back , these days almost all rabbit experts agree that it is actualy the opossite, where as when you or I are scared and disoriented we flap and panic a rabbit freezes and it is this that is happening to the bunny, you are disorenting it and it freezes in fright, rabbits are prone to heart attacks so watch out! Phillip makes a good point about a rabbits heart. Vets have a hard time keeping them alive in surgery for that reason.
I stopped using the “hypnotizing” thing a long time ago. I still use it if a have to do some examination to the underside of a rabbit, but I can not bring myself to do it in a show. Taking advantage of a basically gentle animals failings to show him or her “doing a trick” seems very wrong to me. Bob |
