There are questions you should to ask yourself first...

1. Are you doing the props because you have the artistic Talent to succeed in their creation and just need tips? Any 'specialist' in SFX is an Artist FIRST.

2. Are you doing the props because you have a 'calling' and feel this is your niche?

3. Or are you doing the props to save money?

If it's #3 with no part of the other two entering into the equation then there is a lot more to learn and absorb than maybe you have time for.

Let's assume it's either #1 or #2...

What is the area of expertice or specialization of the FX person? Does he/she create the kind of things you can use successfully? Does that person understand the arena you will be working in and the type of props needed? Stage, Film, Live Theater, Theme Park, Magic Show, Sideshow & Museum, ALL have individual attributes and are of different materials and construction and operation and the usefullness differs greatly from each other.

So you'll need to fill your 'specialist' in on what you do and your requirements before asking questions.

Then...it is best you ask as few questions as possible and do a lot of listening.

I must make my own bizarre magical props because they are one-of-a-kind and not available on the commercial market. Many of them also incorporate unusual magical principles or unusual applications of magical principles. Since I insist that my props look "real," their preparation requires considerable care. At the same time, if I feel that the difficulty of producing a prop is beyond my capabilities, I have a magician-friend who is quite adept at fabrication and whose wife is a professional artist who has made movie props. She has made a couple of props for me.

To be believable, bizarre props must look real and appropriate. If you cannot find them, you must make them. If you cannot make them, you need to hire someone to do it for you.

Fair? Hmmm. What's that? How do you judge it?

Many people think it means "as cheap as possible." (I know that neither Curator nor Bill think that way, and by the way, Hi BIll!, and Alice too!).

Fair can also mean that you arrive at a solution, with only the necessity of building 7 prototypes, before the thing works right. It's better than 8.

Well I have an artistic background so I have no problem dealing with the esthetic,
to do the props I know someone who works for the movie industry specialized in horror effects a very talented sculptor too.
well I was just asking myself about the possible effects ....what kind of things would you like to see, to try ...?
I mean something that as not been done yet ...
:)

ps: here are some of the sfx guy stuff

That's excellent...very fine! This is my favorite:

Look at the dignity, the intelligence, that you see in this creature. It's not gory, or shocking. It's just inhuman, and it doesn't see itself as inferior to humans. Kind of like Dulac or Rackham doing Beauty and the Beast. Excellent!

Yours,

Paul
