Hi,
I was thinking of trying to recreate that effect in the movie "Night of the Demon" (based on the Casting of the Runes) - where the "victim" is given a business card with extra weird writing on it (e.g. "1 hour allowed before the Demon Collects you") and then vanish in a few momemts.... I am assuming vanishing ink wouldn't work - is there something out there? Is it in the Chemical magic book everyone quotes? Thanks! Bruce

You mean appearing writing maybe ?
Can you be a little more specific, I'm not familiar with the movie.

There are several common base indicator chemicals that turn color when a base is present. If you mix a base indictor with a base that evaporates quickly you have a form of disappearing ink.
What I would do is use a brush to draw the message on the card. Use a base indicator that is colorless when a base is not present. Just before handing out the card give it a little secret smug or spray of a base chemical that will evaporate rather quickly. You could show the card free of messages during the effect and even have them write something on the card only to later have the message show up just before you hand the card over and then have the message vanish right before their eyes. I would love to say more, but I do not think that is allowed by the rules of Magic Café. Tim |

Thanks Tim - hey keep posting and you can eventually say more in Inner Thoughts - or PM ... but that is enough to get me started
Mystician - NotD is an old English film really cool -> the "villain" dark sorcerer puts curses on his target victims by secretly passing a scroll of runes to the person and hands them a card which tells them how much time he or she has left to live ... then at the appointed time the person dies in some horrible accident - caused by a demon.... Rent it - you'll like it - I think most bizzarists would

There is a really cheap dissapearing ink on the market...It might solve part of your problem, and see the most recent Howie Diddits thread for the rest.

Hi Doctor Spektor,
This is the film with Dana Andrews(I know of at least 2 movies with the title of "Night of the Demon")? If it's the one I think it is, I agree it's a great film, extremely spooky and atmospheric, but unfortunately I saw the "americanized" version where they tacked on shots of a really cheezy-looking demon that appeared to be constructed of paper mache' near the end, which sort of downgraded my enjoyment. I've been told in the original "British" version the demon never actually appears on film. Do you know which version is on the current dvd? I would love to see it again, this time without the schlocky Hollywood effects! Thanks, Paul |

Hi Paul!
Yep that is teh film - although there is a recent DVD with the British version on it that has about 10 extra minutes - still has the paper mache demon - because you see the story is the director never wanted it in - it was pretty much forced on him my the producer... as the director really wanted it to be psychological vs supernatural - sort of like "The Innocents" film wher you never know if the ghosts are real or just a mental illness manifestation.....
