My local Sam's Club has very inexpensive decks by the dozen: "vegas" brand cards. Something looking like a bee-type back with double V's. They don't, to my non-card-expert hands, feel really cheap or bad.
Any reason I shouldn't use them and stick with the classic everyone-uses-bicycle mantra? |

If they work for you, go for it! If they seem to handle the same, there is no reason why you shouldn't use them. However, if you're planning on using gimmicked cards/gimmicked decks then the most popular designs are in bicycle.
Hope this helps. Tom R |

Agreed! Go for it! No harm in getting used to as many different types of decks as possible.

Personally, I think the Vegas cards are a little stiff. I can't do mercury card fold and bottom steal with the Vegas cards. The card stock isn't as air cushioned as the Bikes. Maybe it's just me, but I'd stick with the Bicycle brand by USPCC.

I'm not sure...but if you're talked about casino cards...somtimes they have two short corners diagonal from each other...this sometimes prevents you from doing some slights like the elmsly(sp) count because when one card is turned face up under other cards....it sticks out

Here in Australia Bicycle decks aren't easy to get a hold of - I'm pretty resigned to buying the most common decks at supermarkets and newsagents. It does mean that I can't rely on tricks using special cards, but I prefer not to anyway. I do find that some of the really cheap and nasty decks don't fan well for me, probably due to the plastic coating they have.

Dluong, these aren't used casino cards. They're brand new standard sized cards with a brand name of "vegas." No cut corners.

Revlovejoy,
They are probably fine for practice, but in performance I use decks such as Bike and Bee, especially Bikes as they are very common and well known. Strange backed and bridge sized cards scream gaffed to me. Though a layperson may not know the difference, many will. Just my thought for the day.(rejoice) Joe

I bought a deck of these cards at Wal*Mart a while back. When they're fresh out of the box, they're a bit stiff and take some breaking-in. After a while, though, they become really sticky and clump together. You'll get pretty much the same usage from these cards as you would from Bikes. You know how Bikes just lose their "cardiness?" These don't, but they do feel kinda weird...
All-in-all, they're good cards. I say go ahead and buy them. I use them for any poker/gambling effects. http://harbrollc.com/product.php?id=16

Why would a competent magician settle for seconds in card? I surely wouldn't. I have used the same brand of cards for nearly 30 years. Same deck, day after day. Would I switch? Not on your life, or on your double lift. Pick the type of card you like and STICK WITH IT. You'll be glad you did!

Gary, the question was to determine whether anyone else with more experienced hands would consider them "Seconds" or not. I've received input to the positive/neutral (same as bikes in handling, same wear time). I've also heard negative based on gaffs being all bikes, (true) and the suspicion people have over non-bikes (not necessarily a given)
Evolve's input specific to the mercury fold was the kind of info I was looking for. Thank you very much! |
