I am going to have to go with wsduncan for the literal meaning of the term. However, common use of the words for a long time, has allowed the meaning to degrade enough that a C/S coin is a gaff.

Technically, I'd have to agree with wsduncan's last post. Now, is it a gimmick or has it been gimmicked?

Well... to me a gaff (coin gaff) is simply a coin altered except during the time it is produced (of coz not state-made coins don't count).
In this sense mis-print is not a gaff but a double-header you buy in magic shop is. No hard feelings here but IMHO it's too extreme to pursue everything "gaff-less". What's bad about using a C/S or [ if it can produce magic effects in a more convenient and magical way. Even if one can achieve the same effect with pure skills, if it is easier to handle with gaffs I'll go for a gaff. In many routines a gaff greatly simplify the moves without compromising the effect, so it'll allow you to foucs more to spec. handling rather than putting so much effort in making your sleights flawless. Of coz knowing routines without using gaff is nice (especially when people simple throw you some coins and ask you to use them), but if the situation allows, gaffs can be of great help.
It only takes a minute to learn how it is done, but takes a lifetime to learn how to do it.

I can see the confusion with the terms gaff/fake/gimmick, in fact I thought I had it straight but now I've changed my way of thinking a bit... but a C/S coin is definitely a gimmick. Just because just about everybody around here has one doesn't make it less of a gimmick than a TT is...

Darn it... I hit enter before making my point, which revolves around this:

I always say I never use a gimmicked coin... Dude (if... if I may call you "Dude")...you're Vinny-Freakin'-Marini! While I'm happy that you struggle with these sorts of ethical dillemas regarding how to honestly represent your methods (a few mentalists might take note), the bottom line is, it matters not one hoot to those of us who admire your work whether you tell us you "never" use a gaff, or "hardly ever" use a gaff, or "only" use a gimmick or two... As an exercise in hashing out a common semantic among us, the discussion has merit. I just hope this isn't the kind of thing you lose sleep over. We love you, man... Regards, -jjg |
