Is hypnosis a science? I'm fairly new to this, how much research has been done using control groups, placebos..Any good books relating to this..Michael Shermer has it under a borderland science in his book...not pseudoscience but somewhere in between..jury is out sorta thing...

Yes it is.
no it isn't seems still to be a question that has some divergence of opinion sorry. You simply have to find everything credible you can read, and form your own opinion. Hopefully Lee Darrow will post soon with a list of books for each point of view.

Hypnosis is the subject of science. Several projects are ongoing.
The hypnotic state has been shown to differ from the normal waking state (and sleeping state) using MRI. Science is a methodology for testing hypotheses. It can be applied to anything, physics, geology, plastics, medicine, hypnosis, paranormal. You may be asking about science in the broader sense as a body of knowledge. Look around on some university websites for hypnosis research and you'll find some interesting stuff. If you mean science as "a clearly defined method for inducting a person into a hypnotic state" then you won't find anything completely cohesive. While there are clear stages into hypnosis, there seems to be less emphasis on them in favour of induction styles. Dave Everett |
