Hi, Doc:
At the time Anniversary Waltz was making a big splash on the magic scene, there was great discussion about using the particular gaff that is at the heart of this trick. Some magicians were concerned that the trick made the public aware of this particular gaff. Would you be willing to share your thoughts on the matter? Thanks in advance. -Marty |

I think you may be referring to the controversy about using a gaff and then handing it out...
Chuck Fayne said in his review ”I cannot in good conscience recommend something that puts such a powerful secret weapon into the hands of a layman...” Well, I totally disagree... because I have seen the look on peoples faces when that card is fused together... they are not thinking that this is a gaff.. they are charmed beyond words... I have had women’s eyes fill up at that moment. So I maintain that the AW is THE most powerful card trick that I have ever performed. Does that answer your query?

I've got to go with the Doc on this one, the look on the spectators faces is just amazing, the reason I'm a magician. They do not care how it's done, they have just been party to an amazing event
Best Wishes, David

I'm with Doc on this one also. Remember - they're not looking at a gaff, but the amazing result of some very powerful magic. The same issue comes up with Daryl's color changing knife routine. The important factor is to justify how the weird article, be it card or knife, got "that" way.

Hi, Doc:
That sure does answer my query. To answer your question, I am not from Scotland, I am from Los Angeles. We did meet at Dean's Shoppe the day that you and Eric came by for a visit and a trim. Nice to see you here. -Marty |

Hey, Doc
Thanks for being here. I did AW for my niece-in-laws (?) wedding last summer and no one, repeat no one, even thought about the gaff. As a matter of fact she mentioned how much it meant to her and the hubby in a letter just a few weeks ago! Great effect. Thanks.

I should mention that Chuck Fayne eventually recanted a bit... I think he tried it and saw the strength of the trick for himself.
Someone once told me that he has made people cry before with his card tricks... mostly because he did too many, ...but that the AW produced real emotion. And it doesn’t have to be a husband and wife ...any relationship can be plugged into the formula.. with varying results.

Doc,
Chuck is a very good friend of mine and we have talked about this effect and his reaction to it. I just want to confirm with you that he did change his mind about it after seeing how much of a reaction it received. I believe his initial reaction was simply fear that revealing the gaff would spoil it’s usefulness. After writing his intial review he did perform the effect and realized that laypeople do not make the connection.

I had the opportunity to visit with Chucko in Sydney at the National convention a few years back and we laughed about it...
Chuck Fayne is one of the funniest guys I know... I just wish he was easier to visit ...Australia is a long way to go... Adam, are you in Aus..?
