I'm looking for a good design for a portable stage. I, initially, only need a single 4' x 8' stage. If I find a good practical design, I will eventually build two additional sections to get to 8' x 12'.
Here are the parameters. I want it as light as practical, but still structurally sound. I may have as many as three people on it. (Myself and two audience members.) I also prefer to have the top (deck) fold so that it's not 4' x 8' when transporting it. I have seen one design where the top (deck) is folded in half lengthwise for transport. That would work. If you have seen a good design or, better yet, have experience with a good design, please let me know. Thanks, Michael Messing |

Kevin,
Wow, I appreciate all the links you posted. I was really thinking of trying to build my own portable stage to keep the cost down, but you gave me plenty of options for purchasing a stage. The reason I was considering building my own stage is that I don't need it often. Usually, the facilities I work in can provide the staging I need. Invariably, it's not my illusion shows where I have trouble (the hotels and convention centers nearly always have a the staging,) it's the times when I'm doing my one-man show in a smaller banquet hall when it can be a problem. Thanks again for your help. Michael |

I work in a theatre and have built many stages and many of the problems that I have encountered is that the stages are large bulky and extremely heavy. Most stages are constructed with a layer of 5/8" ply, a lyer of Celetex, and a layer of luan. I'm almost sure you could get away with only a layer of 5/8" ply. and luan. If you need the stage to be small than a 4x8 piece, you could put the entire stage on a hinge so that it folds in half. If you would like I could draft up some plans for you? PM me and let me know... Thanks

Years ago, in I think MUM there was a portable stage that would fit the bill nicely. This weekend I'll search my files in my workshop to find it, Once I do, I'll let you know about it. I remember that it was very well done and a couple of locals built them and they worked just fine.
Marty I found the plans for the portable stage in my workshop. I had thought this came from an MUM magazine because it looked like their artwork done by Ed Mishell. The stage is 4 ft. by 8 ft. packs down into a case measuring 49 x 14 x 24 inches. Top folds down into four sections, the entire base crossstructure unit is hinged together, sturdy and quite strong. I have seen these in use and they are nice. The only name on the sheet is Bert Rose Portable Stage. I will be more than happy to send a copy of this to anyone who sends me their physical address.I do believe Michael that this will serve your needs. Marty |

Thanks to Marty and all those who have responded. I have requested a copy of the Bert Rose Portable Stage plan that Marty graciously offered to mail out.

I was looking through some Geniis from the early 80s earlier today. Paul Osborne had a protable stage design in the illusion series he published there.
If you don't have access to those issues and would like to see the design, please pm me and I will find the article and send you a copy.
Cheers
