I've been doing the magic square as an opener for quite a few shows recently and have come across a way of telling, straight away, if the audience is on your side.
The number they give you will tell you whether they are 'going with the flow' or 'putting up a wall' As you all know, the most common numbers people pick between 0 and 9 are three and seven. These are the first numbers to jump into a relaxed person's head. However, if they are trying to think outside the box and create a more 'random' thought' by changing their mind they will say number such as 1, 8 and 9. When ever the magic square number is 37 (one person said three, one said seven) the audience is GREAT! But 81, 91 etc. have tended to yeild less accomidating audiences. Of course, this is not a science but and interesting little pattern! |

Actually Nicholas not necessarily.
The reasons people may pick different numbers may varry. IF someone is just thinking of a number to think of one then yea the ones that pop in are right. BUT they are following instructions, and they are far from a relaxed person. They are thinking and trying to help you and want to make the show work and are again far from relaxed! They will come up with other numbers and really want nothing more than the show to work. As a matter of fact they want it to work so much that they are not relaxed and their mind goes to the other numbers. They may be a better audience than the people who just throw out a number and don't care. They may be better at following directions than someone who just does it and has no care either way for helping you. You are definatly misinturpreting some data baised only on a few shows. I would offer to you that you should not concentrate so much on it and simply assume most audiences are on your side. They after all have paid to see you, intending on seeing a good show, why after doing this would they not want you to succede? This is what has always amazed me. People have sought out your show for entertainment, spent their money, and showed up. Of course they are on your side. It is up to you to keep them there. Oddly enough you have about 30 seconds to do so. The first 30 seconds help make or break your show. Use them wisley.

Of course, this is based on a pretty small sample (about 20-25 shows) and of course, is only relevant to my performance as I simply ask people from the audience to name a number between 0-9 without any build up or undue pressure.
Also, not all of my audiences have paid to see me, expected to see me etc as most of my work is for private parties where many of the guests didn't know I was to be there. But worry not my friend, the magic square theory does not up too much of my time. |

Yeah, when doing the circle/triangle force, and some other bits, you can find out how they feel about you by simply following or not following instructions. If your personality is not acceptible to them, they will fight you on the simplest directions.
On the "simple shape" I've gotten dodecagon, octagon, rhumbus, christmas tree, house, line, and after using the four sided shapes as unusable examples of simple shapes, I've STILL had their revelations being the square, rectangle or diamond. That's when I realized that for my act and my life, I needed a huge personality overhaul. I also can't get away with smart aleck comedy during the act if I really want repeat business of any kind and successful mentalism. |

Yeah, cut out the Smart Alec stuff Nicholas. This post is nonsense. You could have been a healer and really helping people. Now, here's the thing:
yesterday I was doing a demonstration to a group (only three turned up) of bowlers (bowling green on grass). Average about eighty four. As I very professionally slid into the magic square routine I noticed the woman in the middle's eyes go glazy. The man on her right had saliva dripping off his chin whilst the other fella' on her left had a damp patch (never mind where!). Question: which one was totally engaged in the effect? I know... do you? This can only be achieved through the workings and teachings of William Clement Stone's (Chicago) 2 great discoveries: Know How & Activity Knowledge. Bobser (The Learning Zone)
