So you try out a new effect/demonstration, you think it looks great and totally impossible, but when audience tested it bombs.
Now leaving aside that maybe the presentation is off a little maybe, what ways do you try and audience test it before you place it before them. I have found this mainly when uses cards in mentalism, which is why I am moving away from them more. But I wonder is there are any geninus ways you have devloped to road test an effect? regards steve

I think with mentalism it is a lot harder to "road test" an effect. YOu can do it for friends and family members, but for me the only way to know is to put it in a smaller show.

A good way to understand the effect is to video your self performing it. Live in performance if possible but in your rehearsal space is also helpful. Then try to see the effect as the audience would. Do you find it interesting? Do parts seem to drag? To much procedure?
But in this case you performed the effect in front of an audience, so try to think back to the effect and figure out why it bombed. Did they see through the deception? Did it drag? Did they just find it not entertaining. You could also compare it to other things that you have done well with. What is the difference between this bit and things you have done well with? I would add a new routine in the cintext of an established show format. If it bombs then at it's surrounded by a good show. I also think that road testing it on friends and family works. Then try it on people you may meet at random. Ifit bombs then who cares?

Hi Steve,
You've already received some good advice but for what it's worth I would never put a new act into a 'monied' presentation. I do a fair bit of free stuff, mainly for elder citizens etc. Now they won't act quite the same as the hip & the youthful, that's true. However it does allow me to play to live people (other than 'my' wife). It also allows me to practice relaxation and timing techniques. Does this make sense? I say this because I have bombed (at least in my mind)in front of audiences with good stuff. By that I mean the stuff was good but my 'acvtivity knowledge' thus my presentation of it was crap. But with the afternoon elder citizens and other free charitable works I discovered I could practice in real live situ. I do think it makes a difference. Albeit as a Scotman doing it for free sometimes makes me cry, just a tad. Bobser

In Mentalism Incorporated, page 18, Chuck Hickok says that he does 20-30 charity shows for the United Way every year. That's where he tests on new material. Is there a charity you would like to support with your work?
