I got to thinking what size perches should be used for doves?
Should the perch be sized to the most common item that they perch on, say like you finger? Does it really matter? James Adamson http://www.seam2006.com

James I just made a dove perch out of PVC pipe. The stand is 6 feet high and the perch is 3 feet and I added six clips to hold jumbo cards. The reason I made it 3 feet was that the dove will fly to a selected card on the perch. My doves did not care for the PVC pipe it was slippery for them, so I put tape on it and now they are ok with it. I will take a picture of it tomorrow so you can see what it looks like.
In my opinion I don’t think the size matter for the dove perch, its just the training to have them only use the perch when they are out of the cage. Maro

Hi James,
First off, you want to have a few different size perches in your cage. Each perch will allow your dove to stretch its feet in different ways. To have your dove live on just a flat surface isn't a good thing, as their feet are made to hold onto a perch, not to be flat-footed. Also, try and have your perches, at least one of them, concrete (or the sandpaper slips that cover the wooden perch, found at any pet store), to keep your doves nails trimmed. This will, for one, keep them from getting caught on things (like a harness), and two, will prevent you from having to trim their nails yourself, and risking injury. Lastly, you don't want the perches too wide or too skinny. They should range from the size of your thumb, to the size of your pinky (no skinnier or thicker), as you stated above. Justin |

This is purely a little idea I wanted to pass along... I cut a branch off a manzanita bush (not sure if they have them where you are..) Anyway, it is strong and offers a couple different sized limbs for your doves to perch on... Just be sure to sand it and let the sap dry so your birds don't ingest and of the particles..

James I also agree with Justin in how to pick the size, but I was not thinking you meant a perch for the cage, sorry about that. I have been working on out of cage perch.

Justin is correct in that the perches should be of varying sizes. If the primary perch is the size of your finger, it will make the dove feel more comfortable when you are handling it. One important thing is that if you live in an area where the temperature gets cold, one of the perches needs to be flat and wider than the feet. In the cold, doves will sit on their feet to keep them warm and if they're curled around a perch, the feet will freeze. The perch should be at least 3" wide. There are good and bad points about putting sand paper on the perch. True, it will help to file down the nails, however it can also scrape through to the blood line. It isn't difficult to trim the nails. Just clip off the very tip of use a file.

I( have a perch where it is made of this rough material.
And it is kinda wavy (not perfectly straight) Supposedly this makes blood flow and helps not cause arthritis in their feet. |
