I'm a 16 year old kid that needs to learn from some experiences. I plan on going to college and then going to NYC to find a job and be a mentalist on the side. Or possibly a full time mentalist. I'm thinking on majoring in pschology and minoring in philosophy. Right now I'm in highschool and have already scheduled my future classes which contain public speaking and a bunch of bussiness classes. My education on these subjects should help a lot with my future. I was wondering if any of you guys could help point me in the correct direction for my future, like what classes you guys took, some experiences you had on your struggle in the real world, or any mistakes that you had made with trying to become a mentalist and a person. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Wow you are sixteen and already know what you want to major in. I would put a bet down that by the time you get to college you will re-think you major and probably change your major several times. Hows that for a prediction?
Down to business here. I think any classes dealing with psych and public speaking will be of great value. You might also want to look into acting classes and or drama. I know when I was in high school a few years ago drama was not "cool". It was a great class and the chicks dig the fact that you are in there, so give that a shot. In my class it was proably 9 girls for every 1 boy. Take those odds!! You will find that with mentalism you have to make mistakes to learn. In my opinion it is much harder to "practice" than traditional magic. You cant just "finger flick" in front of the mirror or camera for a few hours and get it down. You have to think and rethink what you are doing and then just jump in. If you have not started reading books in mentalism. The standard responses are. Annemann Corinda I always suggest ALL Osterlind DVD's and products. I also would suggest Banachek's DVD's and products. Get that stuff and you should be busy until you graduate college. |

Hi Scattered Dream
Unfortunately Chi Chi is NOT WRONG....this time. LOL. He is correct about Drama and Banachek and Osterlind. Also listen to some Kreskin. Familiarize yourself with a lot of things. Remember this...For every full time Mentalist, there are tens of thousands of Dr.'s, Lawyers, and Rocket Scientists. Chase your Dream, but keep your parachute handy. Good Luck Dave

Oh yeah - after Anneman, 13 steps - I'd get TA Waters Mind, Myth and Magick (not sure why that book often gets overlooked) - its steps 14-30 plus some bizarre magic thrown in...

For material I have enough I believe. I've got both Banachek's and Osterlind's DVD sets, all of Luke Jermay's books and other pamphlets by numerous people such as Ted Lesley. I also created an act that has the main theme of mind over matter with a little bit of mind reading in the beginning to prove how mysterious the mind is. I just asked my brother and my school does have a Drama class, so I'll definetly look into that.
Speaking of Banachek, in his pre-thoughts booklet he speaks of the Richard Klause theory. This theory says that younger guys can't pull off mentalism because if you perform to a couple, the boyfriend will get Jealous when a attractive guy is performing for his gal. And then on a Lee earle CD, Lee Earle says performing for a guy's girl will get you tips for entertaining her. Which theory do you guys believe to be correct? I think Lee Earle would be correct because he spoke from experience and the other was just a theory. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

High school kids are nuts. I'd stay away from girlfriends.

I entertain a lot of couples, the women are the most interested in what I do. I've found that if you build up the boyfriend/husband while your doing what you do, it makes everyone happy.
If I can get away with reading a woman's hand, a very touchy feely thing to do, with the male companion hovering over, then doing a card or coin effect should be simple. Much of it has to do with how you treat the couple and your attitude and domineer. Make everyone feel important, and don't poke fun and you will survive. Tony |

Scattered Dream,
I am a full time mentalist and I majored in philosophy. I would love to help you out if I can. I know I would't be where I am if it wasn't for the mentors I have had, both in philosphy and mentalism. If you want talk PM me. - Brandon Cross |

Read the "Handbook of mental magic" by Marvin Kaye and Tarbell course of magic. You will have enough lecture for years and also develop your character based upon you in the real life!
Don't try to be an actor at first be you and the rest will come later... Just read everything you can find about the subject you prefered or find interesting... The more you know, the more you will be able to adapt it later to fit your own taste Do more and more shows to play in front of the audience, this last is the real secret of being a step over the amator around... Doing shows for real audience! After let's talk about the fact you can be payded for this fun ;-) Keep the passion, your passion and never see it like a busine$$$! Kuffs |

A good rule of thumb when performing for a couple, especially younger couples, is to evenly distribute your attention between the two. If you just work with the female companion the whole time, you are likely to start the boyfriend/husband into thinking that you are trying to outshine him and that is not a good situation to find yourself in. If you are doing walk-around, keep your wits about you and pay close attention to the situation at hand. If things seem to get a bit heated, then wrap it up for that table, thank them for their time and move on. Never over do your stay especially when it comes to couples.
