I don't know if this is the section of the Café where this inquiry belongs, but I am looking for a short (one minute or less) anecdote on Houdini that I may tell to open a banquet for top salespeople this coming Saturday. The anecdote should be motivational or inspirational. I've been going through my library and scrawling notes, but want to see if someone on the Café knows a particular anecdote or Houdini quote that might fit the bill.

We have in a book "Magician Among The Spirits" by Houdini a signed autograph of Houdini stating "My brain is the key that sets me free." We have placed it on our Shirts, mugs and glasses.

Great quote, magicusb. The one I was going to post.
There is a postcard from young Ehrich to his "ma," archived I think at the University of Texas, which is signed "your truant son." Houdini ran away from home at a very early age to start his career. The moral of the story, I guess, would be that it is never too early to go for what you want, or perhaps a lesson in the power of conviction and how belief in one's self can help overcome big odds. vicrion . Another idea, though very real, might be a bit too "tired" since it is a common theme in many success stories, and that is just much Houdini struggled to make the 'big time' in the 1890s. |

There is a story that Houdini was once shut in a jail cell in Scotland. He had not expected the police chief to lock him in, as he was just visiting. He worked for almost two hours, trying to pick the lock. In disgust, he basically gave up, and leaned against the door. It swung open. It had not been locked.
Motivational message -- never overlook the obvious.
