I have being planning on putting an ad in my local news paper. Today I got a shock when I saw an add saying:
''BORED WITH magicians and clowns? Ask one of our Mad Scientists to run a Mad Science Birthday Party at your home! Will suit children age 4-12. Check out our website http://www.madscience.org, tel .........'' I need help on structuring an ad to out do the one quoted above. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks, Mike |

How about this
"Why bore you kids with silly science experiments that they will see at school when you can hire (your areas) top magical entertainer for childrens birthday parties. Loud kids garanteed!" Or maybe not use the word magician or clown and just call yourself a 'childrens entertainer'. Writing promo material aint my strong point. Im never happy with mine. Darius |

Tip: Placing ads in newspapers do not work to get you any business. If you can afford a reqular ad then go for that, but the classified section does not work. Go for direct mailing!

There is another magician in my area who I am good friends with and he never gets a break with all the bookings he takes in from the classified section. I think that word of mouth is the best form of advertisement but in order to get word of mouth I need to get shows and in order to get shows I need to advertise.
Darius, Thanks for the idea but I don't want to direct the add at the Scientists, I just want to make it stand out. Mike |

Hi Mike,
What type of magic do you do? Comedy, Illusion, Close-up? The best thing you can do in any ad is make a promise about the thing you do best. In the Mad Scientist ad, the entertainer knows that a lot of people have probably been burned by a bad magician or clown at a kid's party. Consiquently, they are identifying the problem of the kids possibly being bored. They are also making a more subtle promise that they will handle the details of running the party. Finally, they are clear on what they want the ad to accomplish - a visit to their website, where a more full presentation can sell the client on the show. As far as writing your own ad, simply follow their example. Identify a problem, show how you are the solution, and ask them to follow up. If you are a birthday magician, for example, you could try something like: "Birthdays should be all about smiles - EVEN FOR MOM! Give yourself a break from the action while your children are held spellbound by the magic of Michael Rice. Affordable entertainment appropriate for kids of all ages. Call today or go to http://www.magical-mike.com and learn how you can be the hero of you child's next party." Hope this helps, Thanks, Richard |

That is a big help Richard. I do both close-up magic and kids birthday parties but at the moment I just want to advertise for kids birthday parties. ''www.magicmike.com'' I'm not that Indian guy, lol. Any more suggestions appreciated.

Correction if I may. In order to get shows you do not have to advertise. In order to get shows you must be willing to take direct action upon yourself to effectively market to your intended atarget audience.
With that said, if you are going to place an ad, then I would agree with the tips and pointers that Richard mentioned. I never personally find it in good tatse to belittle another entertainer and so would never take the appraoch that the science guy took. I just think that leaves a bad taste in a person's mouth and just sends the wrong signals. You cna be even more effective by not going down that avenue. The key, as Richard nicely pointed out, was that you need to lock in on the problems you know that your target market faces for the event and tell them not only the features of tyour show but directly how this can benefit them and solve their problems. In essenece you are becoming a solutions provider to them. then give them a direct and simple call to action that will want them to take the next step. Kyle

Yes I understand what you are saying, I prefer the idea of solving problems rather then battling with another entertainer. Have you got any examples of what I could say or use to get my mind thinking? I intend on doing a business and marketing course.

I agree ... don't get into a "flaming" contest, you can't win. Most parents of 5-year-olds haven't had enough experience to get BORED with birthday entertainers, so don't worry about the other ad.

Nicely stated Mark. I never worry about what the other entertainers are doing. My main concern is what Kyle and Kelly can directly do to impact and make the prospect choose us over them. I do not do myself any good by "flaming" another entertainer as I feel that really makes me totally less of a professional which I try to be at all times.
I am interested in letting the prospect know of who we are, what we do and how this can directly benefit them and solve their problems for their event. This is what we focus on and it makes a difference. Every birthday party mom or dad have issues and problems they are trying to find solutions for. Come to the table by not just telling them the features of what you do, but how this benefits them directly. You basically are spelling out for them how you can directly solve some of the most common problems you know they will be faced with. By doing so, you create a better and bigger perceived value in the minds of the prospect. They hopefully will not just see you as entertainer XY or Z, but will see you as who you are and as a solutions provider for them. Just my thoughts. Kyle
