I recently decided to put together a parlor type routine and this was my first purchase of a book devoted for the most part to parlor magic.
I've found the book to be very enlightening and informative and immediately made some changes to my routines based on his insights (the man is just down right sneaky). Most of the tricks in the book I have seen John perform in the parlor at the Magic Castle and in his Wonder Cabaret show and I can guarantee there is no hype or filler here. He really is giving the reader the low down on his routining and performance of the tricks, which are in large part old classics. In his hands, these tricks have not been changed dramatically to fit the more fast paced modern world of entertainment. The changes that he has made seem to be small technically but the reader, even if never having performed the tricks, can see immediately how the change would make for a better over all effect. I also found it very motivational. Several of the questions that he posited at the end of his section on the Miser's Dream actually have me thinking about including a version of this trick in the routine that I am putting together. To be honest, I never really cared much for this illusion. For what it's worth, John is the only magician that has ever completely fooled me with all three final loads on the cups and balls and after reading his treatise on the trick in his book it became immediately apparent why. I'll give you a hint...It had nothing at all to do with technical skill. I would strongly suggest this book to anyone interested in performing magic but in particular, those who are trying to transition into a parlor/stage type show who don't want to get into some of the, I'm sorry, I have to say it, "Cheesy" stuff that sometimes defines the stage magician. I e-mailed John several weeks ago about availability and he was nice enough to respond immediately (even on a Sunday morning)and even offered to get the book in the mail the following day before going on one of his lecture tours. He informed me that he had several copies available, so if anyone is interested, you might want to contact him now. http://www.carneymagic.com Have Fun, Howard

There used to be famous actors and singers, while today, God only knows! Nobody visits except magicians and organ-grinders. No esthetic satisfaction." |
