This isn't a review but this seemed the most appropriate place. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if the Tarbell course is public domain, and if any, what other good books are now public domain.
Thanks in advance Brendan

The mail order version of the Tarbell Course in Magic may be in the public domain. It all depends on whether Tannen's renewed the copyright in a timely manner. The course as printed in the Tannen's editions and the EZ Magic editions is not in the public domain, nor is the version of the remaining material as published by Steve Burton.
The predicament here is this. While the original mail order course may be in the public domain, the later version was largely re-written and was given a new copyright. This will play out as would any recent copyright. And the later volumes, 5 - 8, which were not written by Tarbell, fall under completely different copyrights as well. http://www.lybrary.com produces the original course as an e-book. You might want to e-mail Chris Wasshuber to find the answer to your question. If I had any idea what you were planning, I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks Bill, not really planning anything but had a thought about how good it would be to have the Tarbell course up online somewhere as a web site/web book, easier than a pdf eBook. I'm not talking about a public site aiding in exposure, more just an online reference for select individuals. I also get involved with a lot of youth and have a few that I am teaching magic. It would be great for then to read/ work thru' Tarbell as opposed to so much of the other rubbish that is available.
Just thinking and wondering. Brendan

It would be much better to have them purchase the e-book, which is really quite inexpensive, relatively speaking.
No matter what your security system is, if the book is posted on a web site ANYWHERE, people who want to hack into it can do so. So far, it would only be possible to put the original mail order course on line, now that D. Robbins has purchased the rights to the Tannen's version. But it is still a good reference in that form, as well.

My prob with the ebook is that it is a pdf and dreadful to navigate, putting it into a data driven website would make it an easily searchable resource, available from anywhere, anytime. As well as the chapter/class links I am also looking at category type links. For example, being able to quickly search for all card tricks or a list of illusion plans.
Although I am unsure of the origins, there are a few versions available on the peer to peer networks and a variety of less than ethical web sites. If someone wants a free copy it is as easy as starting any file sharing program and typing "tarbel", with such ease I doubt anyone would bother hacking a secure site for the info. I would also restrict access to those who have purchased the ebook as I am not into exposure. I shall pursue lybrary.com and tannens to find out more about the copyright. Thanks for the help Brendan

Brendan,
the original Tarbell Course (60 lessons) is in the public domain. However, the conversion to electronic format, for example the one we at Lybrary.com did, is not in the public domain. You need to purchase an original set of these 60 lessons and do your own conversion. Just copying our conversion would violate the copyright we have on the conversion we did. However, what you are trying to do, is already available at Lybrary.com. Our customers can view their ebooks online on our website, as well as exchange comments and images which are attached to any ebook page. This way one can share thoughts and ideas on a particular trick, move or the whole ebook. This system is currently in beta test on our website and only enabled for one ebook, "The Dai Vernon Book of Magic". However, it will soon be available for many other ebooks, including the Tarbell Course. So rather than reinventing the wheel, why not use what is already available? Best, Chris....

Hi Chris, thanks for the info, I have no desire to breach any copyrights or tread on others domains so I appreciate the advice. I hadn't noticed your new section of the site and shall check it out, I certainly don't want to do any reinvention and am happy to just point people to you, I already send them to you for books anyway
On a seperate but related note, it is a breach to print your ebooks for redistribution, but what about those who prefer to read on paper? Is it also a breach to print a book for personal use only? Thanks for the help, you probably just saved me a heap of time. Brendan

I would think if you printed from the ebook at Lybrary.com it is an illegal copy as when copyrighted I would think it could NOT be reproduced in any form. Now if you located an original set of the lesson that are in public domain you to could copy them and alter them, bind them, convert them to ebood and copyright this reproduction and then nobody could copy your work.
I could be wrong on all of this too! |
