Anyone here ever use one of those "Cane and Top Hat" to Table thingys?
The top hat is placed over the head of the stick where it magnetically clings to the top of the cane. If so, which model do you use? Thanks PW
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

There is an inexpensive model (made in India) that uses the magnetic principle. The legs of this particular cane is very fragile and don’t stand up to much use. It might be OK for an individual that performed, say, one show a month and took real care of it. I have one and will probably never use it.
However the best made (Neilson’s) has a gizmo (plate and catch?) in the hat and the hat is cut to make a hole for the tip of the cane. The knob/handle end splits into the legs. It is rock solid, stable, and designed for a working professional. There is an older type where the legs also came from the knob/handle end (the legs came out by gravity and with a slight twirl of the came). Again, the hat is gimmicked and cut to sit on the machined point of the cane. This type of cane was put out by many different manufactures. I have one from Harry Stanley bought in the early 70’s. It is not the most stable, as you have to insure that the legs are fully deployed. Which is best? Norm Neilson’s without a doubt and without an argument.

Thanks Harry,
I have seen both the Magnetic and Neilson versions on the Web. I am going to look into the Neilson version. Thanks again, that was very good information. PW

The Nielsen cane table, being constructed entirely of metal, also makes a very useful cudgel which can come in quite handy for those emergency audience management situations.

Thanks to the quick search option with specific recommendations and Pete's web reference, I've found exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you. I had question or two. The top hat is sold separately. Do you have to cut the hat? There is a gimmick mentioned. Does this allow the connection of hat to cane without surgury on hat? Should I buy the top hat from Nielson or will a others due? I've had one for years which was much less expensive. Recommendations...one stop shop Nielsen? Help greatly appreciated. Ken |
