Does any Magic Café members use a Wooden Cups and Balls set as their working Cups and Balls set?
I like wooden props and I've used Cups and Ball sets made just about out of everything else but I've been thinking about buying a Wooden Cups and Balls set and was wondering if a Wooden Cups and Balls set had any problems like not being heavy enough, etc. Nobody uses a Wooden Cups and Balls set and I don't see any around. Maybe there's a reason why the Cups are made out of metal and I'm thinking that I probably should just stick with copper or brass like everyone else uses and forget wood. Metal is heavier and can take the banging better...do you think that a Cups & Balls set made out of wood would be good to use as a working Cups and Balls set? I've also seen several Wooden Chop Cups but nobody ever uses a wood set.

There are at least four companies that are manufacturing wooden sets at this time. That's the good news. The bad news is that the good ones are really expensive and the bad ones suck rocks.
Somewhere in the middle are the ones by Khin of Cambodia. Avoid the ones from India, because the walls are too thick and they have no attic space. If you can find some decent sized wooden flower pots, you can sand a saddle into the bottoms (which you should plug with a piece of dowelling.)

Thanks for the advice Bill. The only ones that I've even seen for sale were the cheap Indian ones.

Depending on your style, the small wood flower pots can work.
The holes in the bottom are smaller than most balls. It adds a new twist when a ball larger than the hole penetrates the cup. |
