Now there are quite a few out, believe it or not. And think about it, they tyically do what they're told so the entertainment value is up to your imagination. I own various robots and use them to entertain, myself as well as others. First there's Houdini. He's a Sony Aibo which is technically classified by Sony as an "Entertainment Robot". These are robotic dogs that can see, hear, feel, and are driven by emotions. They can also be programmed to perform specific skits, routines, and responses. They are also remote controlled from a laptop over wireless lan. I raised mine from a newborn puppy, before he could even sit or stand. You can read all about Aibo's HERE
It looks like they will soon be discontinued as soon as stock runs out. Get one before they're all gone! I just got a program to control my PC via speech commands. I can also program the computers response for each word or phrase spoken. Speech recognition has really come a long way. Believe it or not, I say "computer" and the puter responds back "Yes"? I say "Take me to the Magic Café" and the computer responds "Poof" and the I'm here. Download a 30 day free trial HERE. As an example to use for magic, I say "What card did he pick" and the computer responds "The 4 of diamonds" as it launches This Page I forced the 4 of D I think the program could be useful for anyone that uses a laptop or a PC in their act. Or if you just want to entertain someone from your home or office pc. I'm thinking about using a projector and..... |

When I was a kid I was into robots and among others had Tomy's omnibot. He was pretty cool he had a tape deck and you could make him move and speak, record it on the tape and then play it back. I did a double act comedy duo with him and later on brought him to my parties as my "amazing robot assistant".He was pretty bulky and hard to move around and I don't think I ever used him to his maximum ability.
There are some excellent toy robots out now robosapien 2 looks pretty cool, lots of kids have the first one and the raptor. Toy robots are getting better and better so I'm keeping my eye on the market to see if there's anything useable that appears. George |

I also had a Tomy's Robot which could follow you by remote wherever you walked. I converted it by adding a light table on top of it. Whenever I needed the table, it would go to me.

For the last couple of years I have kept my eye on robosapien robots, and have checked their prices in stores and Ebay.
These days I am a bit more slow to buy things. Of course at times I buy something because I know it will go into the show, and then it goes back into the "think" section of the magic dungeon. The latest is the fiddle that plays songs as you put the bow on the strings.(as if playing) Be safe, well and creative. Harris

It's nice to hear some are using or considering using robots as entertainers. I am a fan of robots, and feel their time has come to utilize them. What a great "hook"!!
I have the first Robosapian. He's cute and speaks caveman. His karate moves are the best part of him. Not much use in a show but I did bring him out to play with Houdini, My AIBO at one gig. I just got the Robosapian V2 from Sharper Image. It's a special Edition, metal grey color. He's still in the box. I also have an animated Deer head. At Christmas, put a red nose on him and it's Rudolph. The best part of the deer head is the wireless microphone. An entire vent act could be compiled with that prop alone. I also have The Green Machine Frog Band, which is more like an automatron than a robot. I have the animated Chimp bust from Sharper Image as well. I am working on a routine to bring him into the act. I'm really excited about this new speech recognition software I have been playing with. Connect up an Iz and you have something that interacts during any part of your show. The computers voice will come out of that thing. Couple something like that with a PC projector so you could play multimedia files, and it's all voice activated! |
