OK we all know the illsuion in which he brings someone on stage and transports them to Hawaii or Australia with the video feed thing going. Now does anyone know for sure if he owns the rights to this? Who created this effect? I wanted to do something just like it but instead of bringing a person there it would be me on the beach with a spectator's signed card. don't want to step on toes. It's a great effect.
Also I was told on here that DC was the only one to have the 'shrinker' illsuion but I have seen it in 2 different shows in the USA by other illusionist. |

If by shrinker you are referring to where David gets in a box and the box shrinks itself and David's head and feet are still visible. I believe this is called Squeezebox and was invented by Andre Kole.
As for the Portal illusion, I believe it is entirely David's. Most of his new materiel is designed by himself, Kenner, Liwag and his own team. He used to use a lot of work by Steinmeyer and Gaughan, but I don't think so much anymore. |

Most of his big stuff nowadays has been designed by Andre Kole and built by David Mendoza. Some of the smaller things are invented by David & his team. According to the information I have, the Portal platform was invented by Kole and built by Mendoza, but the whole plot and the video thing was the work of Copperfield himself. I've heard (not sure though) that some parts of the "13" were built by Mendoza and some have been built by "Creative Splashes" from Las Vegas. I might be wrong, but that's what I heard. The inventor of the concept of "13" was Alain Choquette from Canada. "Through steel" is also work of the Kole/Mendoza team as well as the "Squeezebox". The car for the Lottery was built by Mendoza, but I'm not quite sure who invented the concept. "One" has been invented by Andre Kole, but I'm not sure who built it (Mendoza probably or Gaughan). I have no idea who built the "Motorcycle appearance" but it was probbably the same team.

As a side note, I believe the Lottery is one of the best things David has ever done. I saw his show about 2 years ago and that was the one effect that absolutely fried me. He didn't produce the car at the end though, I guess it was due to size or angle restrictions at the theatre. I almost went to the show in Vegas just to see that production. I decided against it because there were many reports that he was ill and the show has been lackluster.

Be creative...you don't have to do it exactly the same way

I just today saw David's show for the second time in three years. It was a one and a half hour show. The audience went crazy a couple of times. He was funny, lots of jokes and still the best.
1: Appearing Bike 2: Hand illusion (with the whole audience trying to turn their thumbs up) 3: Through the Steel Plate 4: Squeeze Box 5: Lottery 6: Card trick (Pregnancy) 7: Slow Motion Duck 8: Portal 9: 13 |

David's "13" illusion- one of the few things built for him by Bill Smith.

The car appearance in David's Lottery illusion is based on a concept from Guy Jarrett I believe, as well as the idea of the rotating arm in the Portal Illusion. They can be found in Steinmeyers "The Complete Jarrett".

Well, I have my version of the Portal Illusion that I will customize so as not to infringe on Copperfield's method. It is a beautiful effect I am sure most people can agree.

I agree... the vanish is fantastic, but the illusion itself... let's put it this way: he has better ones

Yup. Sorry, I forget it. I wrote what I remembered right after the show. But let me tell you, Corey, I didn't like Anthrax. Maybe that's why I forget it.

Whilst I haven't seen Lottery or Card trick (Pregnancy), he did put them in the show right after I last saw him and that was a few lifetimes ago! Appearing Bike (Good but hardly new and hardly DC standard. It is, after all, a shadow box!) Hand illusion (Filler! Hardly an illusion in itself) Through the Steel Plate: New but boring - Squeeze Box: Old and still boring. Slow Motion Duck: OH PLEEEEEEZZZZE! If I have to put up with that again, I'll be mounting the stage to ring Webster's bloody neck! So after all that waste of time, we get on to the biggies: Portal: Lovely if he isn't just going through the motions - which he has been since about 5 years ago when I last saw him. But on the odd night it's beautiful - But it's still getting dated. 13: Ok if you like it, but for me it's very long and drawn out for what it is - maybe of interest to the punters who don't know how it's done. I first saw him when he was doing a "15 year special/unexplained forces" show and that was THE VERY BEST of the oldies (Not a shadow box and a duck!) and finished with 3 or 4 Biggies. There are lots of great old one that he could bring back if he hasn't got anything new - some had never made a reappearance. (Barclay house is just one that would be simple to bring back, but there are lots more) So hopefully we will see some new biggies (Maybe a TV special! - OK, I was joking!) or at least some of the good old ones. (No duck included!)

I do think that David is an amazing performer, but I find that he seems worn out, tired or lacking energy. I have seen him numerous times, and even though he presents the same effects alot, I do like his performance, however I think he either needs to add more illusions (different ones or new ones) or needs to take some time off, he just seems really overdone and when I saw him, he looked sick (that was about three weeks ago).
Anyway, I'm not trying to take anything away from him at all. The man is an icon. Just my opinion. |

It used to be that a disclaimer was given before a TV magic show stating that no camera tricks were used. We now go to the theatre and watch a large projection of a TV image and see our star teleported to some exotic beach, and the creators of this illusion believe that it never crosses the audience's mind that they've seen this more convincingly done in motion pictures and maybe they're not so impressed despite the applause afterwards.

Zaam101: I'll have to agree with your assessment of Copperfield looking a bit tired. I saw him on Tuesday, and although the show was wonderful (my fourth time seeing him), he did seem a little less into the theatrics than he used to be. The illusions were just about flawless, and he didn't really miss a beat on patter, but he didn't have the same passion that he seemed to when I first saw him.
I noticed that upclose he is looking a little under the weather. I made it on stage for 13 and although he still looks better than I would after doing 500 shows per year he's starting to look a little more ragged. And to the original poster: I'm almost sure that the effect is Copperfield's exclusively. And even if it isn't, it's going to be an effect that will always be associated with his performance. The strength of the effect largely relies on his presentation (including the somewhat cheesy, but effectively emotional backstory of a separated parent and child). Even if you're able to obtain the rights to the effect and rework it for a card reveal most audiences that have seen Copperfield will remember his presentation, and quite likely regard you as having copied it. I'd recommend trying to start from scratch and try to build a new effect from the ground up. That way your audiences can see something this is distinctively you. I know it's definitely easier said than done, but if you're going to be investing the time and money to build such an elaborate set-up, the end result would be worth it! |

The last time I saw him, which was 2 years ago, he looked tired to me. But he put on a great show. Great laughs and a lot of standing ovations!
Cheers, Michael

The guy works so mad hard. It's insane. Those guys really work to the bone. Have you ever met a roadie who did that for life? Those guys look like an old piece of beat up leather. David really needs to take a year or two off to relax, develop new things, and enjoy life. (Not to say he does not enjoy life.) I know how he feels. Magic is all I know and its all I want to do. Ask Mike. I don't know what vacation means..... ha! Work, work, work... David's amazing but if he doesn't take care he'll have all sorts of health issues.
