I'm making a list of books that are magic effects for kids....
The Colouring Book: this one is pretty obscure. Its starts off blank and then pictures appear. Then....get this...colours! The Stamp Album: Stamps appear and disappear Derek Rutts Caterpiller Book: A caterpillar comes out of a books spine then butterflies fly out Hot Book: fire in a book Barry Mitchell's Attack of The Book Worms: Worms fly out a of a book. Wolf Wacky Worm: Not actually a book...but it looks like one. Worm appears and finds card. |

Axtel makes a great Book Puppet - http://www.axtell.com/othanim.html
I like to use it after first pulling out my "dangerous" book modeled after the scary looking book in Harry Potter movie #3. The Axtel book is friendly by comparison and I don't even have to open it up- it just reads me the spells I need... between telling jokes about my magic. Don't downplay The Magic Coloring Book, or if you are getting bored with your store-bought mechanical version, try Jim Gerrish's routine where you use a real kids coloring book and all gets taken home by the helper at the end of the routine. After all the original trick dates back to 1584 and it was time for a re-make. If the audience is old enough to be interested in reading Harry Potter, my Better Book Test in The Wizards' Journal #6 can be done with any or all six volumes, and because you can divine the entire passage they have freely chosen from the book, it can hold their interest. Finally, if you're not determined only to look at props you can buy in a magic store, there are many tricks that use books or magazines in The Encyclopedia of Dove Magic (doves are optional), Tarbell, and even the Mark Wilson Course, proving that Reading is FUNdamental after all!

Another book magic trick would be Three Bears by Supreme...this is where characters pop out of the book as you read it and ends with a surprise where the 3 bowls of cereal turn into Goldilocks

Ken Scott has the Book of Treasures. It's a good library effect with an ending that has gold coins falling out of the book.
