All coin men must know this man. Why, he's the greatest coin magician who ever lived--- A.K.A... Tony Slydini.

Why do you think most magicians take on Italian stage names...??? Be Italian, or be envious. the godfather |

Slydini was someone special. He's gone. Almost a generation gone now.
Fortunately there are many who studied with him, and some great footage available of the guy doing his magic. Well worth studying the shadows and echos he left behind.

At the last IBM meeting I attended (just a few weeks ago) our ring librarian played a clip from the Dick Cavett show, where Slydini was performing the Flight of the Paper Balls. Absolutely classic performance!! I also have some very cool (and ultra rare) footage of him at a party (for Tony Spina) with Frank Garcia where they each take turns sitting around a table performing for friends and family. The footage is from 1982. Slydini was 80 or 81 years old and still remarkably sharp witted and dextrous. This thread reminds me of the need to do more research and seek out more performances by this man.
BTW, Vinny... when I was a kid we used to sit around making up Italian stage names for ourselves. You just jogged a familar and welcome memory. Thanks, paisan. |
