I learned mine from Lorayne. He has written and re-written his book several times. Go with How to Develop a Super Power Memory.
Although Feinagle did develop the system that Lorayne's is based upon, Lorayne probably got his start with either the Roth system or the Zufall system. If you can find the David Roth memory course (not by the coin man, different David Roth) you will have a book that is superior to anything that Harry Loraye has published. For one thing, there are more illustrations. These make it much easier to grasp. A lot of this depends on what you intend to do with it, though. If memorizing a deck of cards in one minute is your goal, Harry's system may not be the best. If doing a memory demonstration for a group of people is your goal, it will work just fine. I used to present "20 Object Memory" for lay audiences on a regular basis. It never failed to bring down the house.

Bill I just taught that to a guy and it amazed him even knowing what it was going to be. Audiences love that stuff, when presented right that is.

I have seen Harry credit the Greeks many times. I am not sure he claims to have invented it as much as tweeked it.

Magicfish, why do have to write, that you think Harry Lorayne is great about after every second post?
Is it because you are paid by him? Maybe this would explain why I get insulting e-mails by someone working for Mr. Lorayne after nearly every post I write on memory. I can memorize a number with 250 digits in five minutes, a deck of cards in 40 seconds - and I do not have to use a single technique, that has not been known by people at least 400 years ago! I would love to compete against Mr. Lorayne or any of his students in a memory competition. In some memory competitions there is even prize money to be won. But if you ask the successfull competitors you will hardly find anyone using Loraynes work. Again: With the books written by Mr. Lorayne you will be able to memorize a deck of cards in two minutes and maybe in a minute, but you can do the same with the techniques of nearly all memory trainers. And for 99,999% of the people this enough anyway. So read the books, which writing and teaching style you prefer. But do not battle if Lorayne or Trudeau my memorize more or faster, because you can just take a look at the competitions and ask the people what technqiues they use to memorize a deck in 32,13seconds or 1949 digits in an hour. Or read the book by Dominic O Brien, because he (seven times world memory champion) wrote it down.

I saw an infomercial for a Harry Lorayne memory course
on TV in the early 90's. I was very puzzled by the infomercial. In one of the demostrations, a shuffled deck of cards is handed to one of Harry's students. The student deals through the cards at a nice clip, "memorizing" the cards as they are dealt. The student stopped dealing when only a few (a couple??) of cards remained in the undealt face-down deck. The student then announced which cards had not yet been dealt. Finally, the last few were turned over to show that he was correct. Why was I puzzled? Well, if the course really teaches you to do things like this, why was the demo faked? I recognized the student as a magician I had met at one of Andruzzi's Invocationals. I also recognized the shuffle as a false shuffle that retained the bottom stock. The shuffle was done by another of Harry's "students." The shuffler was a well-known (to magic insiders) NY magician.
