On the leaving yourself impaled, that is how Simon Drake ended the Iron Maiden show he did "Raising Hell".

I bet if you turned it into some type of race against death. Like an escape and then "die" by being impaled. And then have people come out and state the show is over, sorry to disappoint, etc...... It's a cliff-hanger in the audience's mind. That reminds me of certain movies that make you ask at the end, "did he get away?", etc.... I think it would be neat, but not in a one night show. Maybe in Vegas.

That sounds interesting in theory, but am afraid it wouldn't work too well in the real world. If the show is of certain type, a horror type of thing, it would be well within the context.
If someone gets impaled and then people come on stage and say "sorry, we blew it, the show is over" its not a cliffhanger but a traumatic experience. You really can't compare magic to movies in this case. With movies, people know that it is fake. If handled like mentioned in a live situation, the audience is gonna be in a very mixed emotional state-not to mention someone actually might have a heart attack or something. It's not that rare. People fainted watching Alien and that is just a movie. Illusions like Impaled need a resolution because people need to know the performer is fine. Usually things build up towards a finale which is better than things before it. I have closed my stage shows for years with snowstorm-way before I ever knew DC was doing it and I had even heard of Kevin James' animator. No matter what I have done, snowstorm has gotten standing ovation with many people crying. Its not just the story, its the right music and the right light (yes, just one). I personally like my audience leaving filled with joy and amazement rather than horror. The arc of drama applies to a magic show as well. We have deviated from the original question a lot... Like mentioned, Owen's and ShowFx make good models. Haven't seen a Bill Smith model, but I take Magicjess76's word for it-and Bill is a great builder. From what I have heard, a pneumatic model is better than electric. If you really want an Impaled, consider its placement in your show carefully.

It sounds as if you have made up your mind that you want an impaled. It is truly a spectacular illusion and always brings screams from the audience. My impaled is an Owen's. There is no question in my mind that Owen's is the best way to go for this illusion. The power comes from compressed air and the timing from a battery. Both of these can be adjusted to change the speed. Make sure your assistant is physically fit and not faint-of-heart if you plan to use them for this illusion. Also plan on a great deal of practice to sell this properly.

I have an Impaled but I stopped using it. For the simple fact I couldn't build a cool, unique story and routine around it. I like telling stories with my illusions and this is one that has stumped me for 5 years. Any suggestions?
Seems like this topic has ran dry before it even started...sigh. |
