The magician community is one of the most influential communities out there. We have trained the people that failure is good in many tricks and that fear is absolved with failure. What I am saying is that we as magicians have brought the idea that by failing a trick or feat we have made it correct.
For example I was watching Criss Angel the episode where he was put into a barrel full of water and shackled outside it, then lifted into the sky. The people were all worried that he wouldn't make it and they feared for him, but after the 2 minutes everyone was relieved, because all magicians fail at escapes. They "have to" appear somewhere else or they "have to" have some slight entertaining confusing pause. Probably if David Copperfield did fall into that bed of spikes and burned to death on live TV people would be clapping to his death (until told what really happened). I'm not saying this because I think magicians should stop doing this. I'm saying this because I want people to sit back, think about it, and laugh. The last thing we might ever hear is applause.

Thank you! You're completely right! At the Circus, year after year the high wire act has somebody almost fall. They stop the show to check to see if he's OK. This has happened for the last 6 years! People saw this more than once and it took away suspense. Panic is great, too much looks cheesy.

Well as magicians normally use some "device" or two to do escapes, (instead of really lock picking, etc.) what are they supposed to do? 3 seconds after the lid is screwed on you see the Magician open the t*** d*** and crawl out removing his handcuffs 1 second flat with a quick move?
You have to build up a trick or you don't have a trick! Under that thinking, why bother sawing the girl in half as we all know she is going to be put back together? Rumour has it that Houdini used to sit in the wings reading a paper whilst the audience thought that he was still drowning!

It's irony, really, that makes it so funny. People freak out at the feat itself, but at the conclusion always clap. Even if it goes wrong because they, in their heads, see that this couldn't have possibly happened in front of their eyes, that someone could have died. It's mental shock, really. We as magicians have put this into people, and like I said above I don't in any way think this is wrong I just think its funny.
