Todsky,
I hope the Café Staff visits this thread and cleans up your last post! Perhaps there is still time to modify (or delete) it before it's too late. (Perhaps they should clean up "all" your posts for that matter. Luckily I know you well enough to know that this is your attempt at wry humour. "Wry"..., I don't know... It's just your "Wray". Guess I can't top-it! Best, Jonathan P.S. I apologize for going off on this tangent in the first place and hope that future postings can get this thread back on a positive track, in line with the topic at hand --"About Rates".

Here are my 2 cents on this topic. First of all, I charge $300 for an hour of private strolling and $150 for each additional hour after that. That being said I get twice that amount for doing corporate strolling or an elementary school show and 3 times that amount for a middle or high school show and 10 times that amount for a college or corporate gig. The bottom line is who is paying for it.
Schools and corporate just pay more than private. You have to know your customer and charge accordingly. Over the years I have gradually raised my fees based on the venues that I approach and the amount of value that I have attached to my programs. Education and motivation attached to the programs allow you to raise your fees. Confidence in your ability to blow people away increase your fees. You must also develop an attitude that this is my fee and you can not be upset if the person passes on you. It all comes down to confidence. Hope this helps. Jeff Blum |

(I am going to post this here too)
I think many magicians undercharge. The guy who won eating the most hot dogs in a national contest gets $15,000 per appearance. Think about it...

Jonathan,
Did you say Todsky had Rye humour??? I'll drink to that (rye - get it? I hate having to explain jokes!!!) Must be the humidity here in Montreal that is causing us to act up (Tod, Jonathan and myself) Another issue about over charging and the customer feeling he did not get the value he was expecting (perceived or otherwise) is that you will be the last magician he uses!!! Harming not only yourself, but all the other's out there! Comment: "You have to know your customer and charge accordingly." I think you have to know the industry or the market for your pricing, to be customer specific with your pricing I feel could lead to problems in the long term. If it is a standard product ie. 1 hour of close-up - I don't see how you can charge 1 school more than another (if all things being equal ie. geograhic market etc.) If you are not doing a volume of shows (or full-time) this may not be an issue, if you are working substantially, and your prices are all over (for the SAME thing), it will catch up to you. Besides if I had to keep track of varying prices I would go koo-koo (no comment from Tod or Jonathan please!!!) even if I was using a data base. But as far as my rate for corporate walk-around (party, cocktail, dinner) it is $275.00 - 325.00 for the first hour and $100.00 per hour after that. Someone here is getting $600.00 the first hour and 300.00 each additional??? Jeff you would have to clarify for me, is it the same offering in all cases for your other examples with the multiplier?? Hi Blair!
I just did a few shows for the CSDM... If I was not charging the same fee for different schools, they would certainly pick up on this very quickly, so I tend to agree with what you are saying about standardizing your prices! Have a nice day! Louis Jutras |

If you are happy with your prices stick to them.

I started booking every call I got. Thought it was great until I realized that 100% closing rate does not mean that I am the best. Well did some checking around and forun out that others charge less than I do for magic only, but when they add in all we do (magic, face painting and balloons) sudenly I am the lowest price in the area.
Well I just gave myself a raise. |

Jack Scratch,
I joined this conversation late but I have to tell you that I like your website. Looks like you do a lot of unique characters. This makes you more of a "Category Of One!" not a commodity like most magicians. Daring to be different & unique increases the rate you can charge. Believe in yourself and charge what you need to earn to meet your needs and live comfortably. Too many price themselves cheap but so are their acts. Best of luck to you. |

Today I realized that pricing shows for the petroleum industry should stay within industry standards for price quoting. Therefore, next time I give them a price quote I will respectfully submit it as $4000.009.
That last .9 of a cent must be relevant to something. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

"The guy who won eating the most hot dogs in a national contest gets $15,000 per appearance."
Unreal. I continually barter with customers and event planners over pricing. The worse part of this business for me.
