I would suggest a course in primal scream therapy and an orgone accumulator in the basement, a sensory depravation tank isn't necessary for the beginner but those wanting to take the art to the next level couldn't seriously be expected to do without one.
An ordinary garden shed can be customised to suit the needs of a budding mentalist, it should have at least one window for peek practices. Corona |

While I respect the professional entertainers who would teach them "nothing"...I would guild them to books that help them understand what makes mentalism:
1) different from magic 2) and entertaining. I would want them to learn WHAT mentalism is first ... then HOW to present it in a entertaining manner. The best single book is Bob Cassidy's mega-book The Artful Mentalism Of Bob Cassidy Then I would have them read anything by Barrie Richardson to learn how to create interesting PRESENTATIONS of mentalism. I constantly study Barrie's routines for examples of how to create an interest in what you are doing. His two books are classics. My book (Mentalism Incorporated) would help them understand how to BUILD AN ACT act. I would also encourage them to seek out and WATCH several full time mentalists perform for lay audiences. This would help them learn how each person created a PERSONALITY that connects with their audiences. I would keep them away from DVDs and Tapes that teach tricks. The new person needs to EXPERIENCE what entertaining looks and feels like. At this time of my career (almost fully retired), I find it exciting to guild talented, motivated entertainers into mentalism. This includes magicians. As Jim is badly paraphrased: 'It's a small mind that can find only one way to spell..."
That and I'm lucky I can spell my own name. |

As a magician, turned mentalist, turned CRAZY -- I have become a bit of an elitist. I think that these newbies have to want to perform mentalism for the RIGHT reasons, which -- usually they do not understand.
I would tsrat them with 13 steps, and the ETMMM from osterlind. I would also have them seek out a live performance by KRESKIN -- this man is a master class in how to entertain with mentalism. On another note -- I was recently horrified to discover that RUCKERS ( a canadian chain simmilar to the american chuck e cheese) sells a variety of proffesional caliber magic effects at a drastically marked up price ( compared to dealers) and in an enviroment that is catering to the 8 - 13 year old age bracket. Does this make any sense? Start em young with effects that they won't understand and don't have the skill to perform -- good work!

Mentalist is something that has to be learned and moulded to one's style so its quite hard to teach. And why should we teach when we are not the creator of the effect?
I believe and support the idea of directing them to the correct sources.
Think outside the box, cos people are all thinking inside now!! - ClouDsss
