Hey guys,
I am thinking about approaching some restaurants so that I can make some money for school. Would you be so kind enough to provide me with your valuable insights on how the pay works (ie. tips from customers, hourly wage, etc.) and what tricks do you find the audience is the most receptive to? Thank you. |

I'd refer you to "The Magic Menu" for info on restaurant entertainment.
Jim Pace also has (had?) an excellent book. I don't remember the title, but I do remember learning a ton from it. Also, in terms of the going rate, I'd ask other magicians in your area. If they're supportive of you getting into the biz, they'll be able to give you a better indication of what you can expect. Every city has their own nuances when it comes to restaurant performers.

I am located in Toronto and I really don't know any other person who does this. I hope it's not against the law here. I was actually hoping to start something.

Spade,
When I was living in Toronto there were many restaurant magicians working: Bob Farmer, David Drake, Bruce Posgate, Elizabeth Warlock, David Ben, etc. Check with the Browser's Den or Morrissey's. It's certainly not against the law, but also you won't be "starting" anything, either. |

Peter,
Excellent reference to the Browser's Den. Jeff is awesome. I recommend his shop over all others. I am from Nova Scotia and there are no magic stores in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia so I order from Jeff!! Also, restauraunt magic is good, but I find mall magic (speak with the mall manager) is better because people aren't eating. Where I live, people get ***** when you bother their gorging.
