I know it kind of made me depressed. It seems like it'll be just like Vertigo, only add another hour of no magic. Again I could be wrong but this is what I've heard from the inside, so we will see soon. The concept of people rejecting many of Pauls ideas in favor of interviews just boggles the mind. Hopefully we will see the good stuff on Davids dvd release.

If you want to see Paul Harris magic, wait for his DVD's to come out. Blaine has moved past what we define as "magician" and the disappointment in not seeing a few more tricks will be limited to the magic community.
Which is not ABC's prime concern. Bob |

Pauls DVD's have been put on hold because of all the work he was doing for the special, but I am certainly waiting anxiously for those. I know for a fact that much of the public loves Blaine for his magic and NOT his stunts, even though his stunts gather all of the attention. Attention does not equal enjoyment, people enjoyed watching David for his magic. ABC is turning this into a stuntman reality show, bad move I think. Why do people keep watching reruns of his specials? They already know how the stunts played out.....they like to watch the magic again.

I really enjoyed that special. There were very few shots of him performing street magic, but of what was performed I enjoyed watching. I beleive watching him prepare for and finally complete the breathhold was worth the 2 hours. That shoelace thing, he was teaching to those kids? AS if it's something anyone can do? but that tooth trick just blew my mind, regardless of how cheap the effect is or not (i think I know the secret:) ) I thought it was his best special yet (not for the street magic) but for the stunt.

Obviously Blaine didn't have that much of an advantage since he couldn't make his goal. Very dramatic television, though. Too bad there wasn't much magic.

I agree, too bad he didn't make it but I feel bad for him....unless that was the whole point in the first place. now he has a reason to come back with another special, like a sequil to this one and finially make it. if that was the whole secret idea all along, even more respect from me goes out to him. You gotta give the guy credit for doing this for a week under water, then after that beating making it 7 minutes with no air and with all that pressure from media, fans, etc. He's back on top in my opinion, and this is coming from someone who was never really a blaine fan from the beginning.

Great special, the whole setup was cool. For being 98% stunt material, the special was compelling. I enjoyed the bit they put in about the freediver who passed away when the mechansim malfunctioned - this added an emotional element to the whole thing.
I also really liked the transitions where David was sitting underwater in the ocean with all the stingrays and fish going by, wearing his nice shoes and slacks. He is quite the showman. I did not like the host of the program. For being a smart looking guy dressed in a fine suit, he used too much slang and talked with too little eloquence and grace. I enjoyed the teeth illusion and the shoelace routine. The method on the shoelaces seemed easy to me, so I look forward to hearing peoples opinions on that one who don't know magic. The tooth thing was pretty bizarre! Pretty cool idea there, if it was a stooge, that's fine, that's a great use of a stooge. Freaked everyone out there in the Palms! Anyways good show. I am sad he didn't make it, though. And I know he is disappointed as well. It would have been glorious had he made it. Still, he held his breath for one hell of a long time, --Jack http://www.jack-stephens.com |

Dramatic, I guess go. Magic, not really. Entertainment, absolutely not. The only part I enjoyed was the shoelace routine. I believe this was the worst "magic" special I've ever seen. I'm shocked he didn't make it though. Unfortunately, I guess this means he'll try again. Maybe next time I'll have enough sense to watch something else.

All I can say is, thank God 24 was on at the same time. I had an excuse to NOT watch it. Blaine is famous, I am not sure how or why but I can't deny he has a following, and bless him for that.
I have found his stunts to be something made out of nothing, his magic average and his personality like dry toast. But he's struck a chord with people so you can't deny he must have something people like. I just think performers like Blaine and angle who present seriously elaborate stunts as "street" magic do real street performers a disservice. I think someone here once said, Even David Blaine couldn't do the stuff he does as a street performer. But, what can I say, he seems to get specials so someone likes him. This was in my opinion David's Best special. The footage that he had recorded of him underwater, the interviews, it all went together so well. And we saw some of the most horrifying and captivating footage ever broadcast in primetime I am sure ( the clip of the free diver that died...) It really created a sense that what he was doing was incredibly dangerous... Hats off to David!

I'll never understand the reasoning that David Blaine somehow 'hurts' the magic community. How can you hurt something that's long since dead on a mainstream level? David Copperfield's time as a mainstream mega-star has come and gone. Chris Angel may have been a cult icon, but most Americans don't have a clue who he is, nor have they seen his show. And for the last couple of years, we've reverted back to the point where most people, upon hearing the word 'magic,' automatically think of bad rope tricks, rabbits in hats, children's birthday parties, and ill-fitting tuxedos.
Blaine is the ONE guy out there trying to make magic, or at least some form of it, cool to mainstream America. Yet fellow magicians just bash him and bash him for not tailoring his entire two hour special around trying to trick them. Guess what, to the average American, the ambitious card is a blowaway trick. Just because things like double-lifts and tenkai seem like amateur trickery to us hardcore followers doesn't mean that they don't have the ability to absolutely knock a layman on his ass. Copperfield's floating rose is a trick that every magician can do with ease, but it was still the 'holy ****' trick that carried with me through my youth and inspired me to study magic on my own. In my humble opinion, if you really care about the state of magic in America, yet you bash Blaine at every opportunity, then you're a bit of hypocrite. No offense meant, but Blaine is going to pop a huge rating for that special last night, and if you truly feel Blaine is doing some great disservice to the magic community by bringing new attention to magic and opening the doors for other magic specials to take place, you're delusional. Without Blaine, mainstream awareness of magic would be at, or close to, zero. With Blaine, it's actually cool to pull a deck of cards out at a party and start doing some tricks. Personally, I'm grateful to the guy for all the awareness and attention he's brought to an otherwise dying mainstream art form. |

He did a good job, I really think he can beat the record, if he just ate and didn't torture himself for 7 days he might have. The magic sucked so that ****ed me off, but one of his bodygaurd leaked out his next stunt. No guarantee but he said that he is going to put himself in a bottle which they will make in the shape of his body and he is going to throw himself in the ocean for I don't know how many days. Whether this is true or not we have to wait and see, but this one seems more intersting thatn "Drowned Alive"

KenJax,
I am not sure if I feel Blaine hurts magic or the community. As a whole, anything that brings attention to the craft is good. Isn't said there is no such thing as bad publicity? But how do you feel when someone you know or a spectator who has seen Blaine seeming make a watch appear inside a closed jewelry store asks, can you do that? What average street performer can get access to a building to rig that set up? and the cost lay out? I feel he makes elaborate and costly illusions appear as "impromptu" street magic that he could do at anytime any place. ( I have a feeling that last statement is going to draw flack LOL) Sure a good performer makes an audience feel that this all possible, but I think at some level people have expectations of what is to be expected at a stage, verses parlor, verses street verses bar performance. Blaine, and Angle blur that line to a degree that I feel is not up to par. But that is all my opinion, as you have yours. "For it shows things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be. But which it that he sees, even the wisest cannot always tell" ~Galadriel "A heretic is a man who sees with his own eyes." |
