Both are very nice. Sherwoods are larger and obviously will take a larger load compared to Standard-sized Van Dokkum cups. Also, Sherwoods will sit in the hand quite comfortably due to the bead placement. The unusual spacing of the beads looks fine when the cups are engraved, but I generally like the look of closely-placed beads, myself. Van Dokum's are also very heavy if you're looking for that sort of thing. Now for the obligatory, but completely useless advice: buy them both .

That's not quite the case.
The van Dokkum cups come in 7 different sizes, from the micro cups to the Monster cups. There may be 8 by now, Auke is constantly expanding the line. He's not going to make any that are larger than the Monster cups, though. He has 3 or 4 sizes that are larger than the Sherwoods. The van Dokkum (note the spelling -- van is Dutch, von is German) stainless steel cups are almost indestructible. Auke sometimes will kick them around a display room at a convention, just to show how tough they are. They will take a beating. But they are fairly heavy, and if weight is a factor, you should consider the Sherwoods instead. I like both sets. Or maybe I should say all 15 sets.

As Bill and Frank have already said, both Brett and Auke produce top-quality cups. In either case, it depends which set you want as to how much money you spend.
The van Dokkum cups are principally available in stainless steel and brass (though Auke can custom-make them from other materials as well); each cup is machined from a solid block of metal, so they're heavy cups. The entry-level Sherwoods are copper or brass, then the 'top of the range' in silver and gold; all of Brett's cups are spun from a sheet of metal. Because they're spun, they have a slightly more 'organic' feel to them. Although the Sherwoods are lighter than the van Dokkum cups, they're still a very respectable weight. You'll be pleased whichever set you get. The only distinction between them may be that the Sherwoods will cost less to ship to you in Australia! Richard
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler
