I`m very bad at magic history and where effects originates from.I kind of stumbled on an effect while practicing but I don`t know whether the idea has been presented before. Here it goes,in the simplest terms I can think off.
1)Spectator cuts the deck into 5 piles. 2)He/She picks 1 of the piles. 3)Looks at the pile and thinks of his/her favourite card in the pile. 4)He/She then counts the no. of cards in the pile and remembers the position of his card in the pile. Then she mixes up the cards by putting the remainder 4 piles below and on top of her pile. 5)The magician takes back the deck and knows what card the spectator though off,by asking what position her card was in the pile she picked. *This is done while the magician is facing away from the spec. Can be done with a borrowed deck. The final revelation of the card can be done is many ways.I`ve fooled so many magicians with this. Has the idea been seen before?

Yes, this is on one of Sal Piacente's DVDs as the '4,5,6 packet trick'. I believe it has its origins in the "Three Pile Trick" in Hilliard's 'Greater Magic'.

Scarbo is correct, piacente presents this simple trick in a way that makes it seem totally impossible. I must revisit it.

Thanks guys,my history of where effects originates from is embarassing.I`ll try to get a hold of the sources and see how the routine can be improved.I think the routine sure fits into the mentalism category.
