You practice till you can not do it incorrectly. Be that 2 or 2000 times.

I take a move and practice it as much as I can in off-times, like riding the bus, taking a break at work, or during commercial breaks while watching TV. The important thing is to practice daily, not a zillion times in a row. Repitition is important to learning, but after awhile your muscles and brain get tired and it loses its effect. I'd say frequency is more important than repetition. Remember, when you perform, you'll only be doing the move ONCE!

Be sure and get plenty of "cold" practice. That is not successive moves. With successive moves you technique could improve and you be doing it pretty well, but when you do the double lift or any other move, most of the time ur doing it cold, meaning you have not been warming up practicing the move numerous times. So take a lot of breaks and come by an do it cold. I generally with card moves just leave a couple decks in various places around the house that I frequent, and when I pass by one, pick it up and do the cold move. Cold move practice in the long run will be the best practice after you learn to do the move.

You should learn to do the DL without looking at your hands. Practice should not become a chore, practice with a purpose. Mimic the way that you pick up a single card, that is, make the DL look like single lift. Practice will be required until mastery is attained...there is no magic number regarding learning by repetition. Everyone is unique. Don't worry about it...it will come.

Here's what you do, turn one card over. Now take all the time in the world to turn two cards over and make them look exactly the same.

Keep a few decks laying around the house. When you pass by one, stop and do the move you are working on. Don't forget to keep one in the "Gentleman's Reading Room" for a little regular practice.

Practicing magic technique is not like lifting weights. You don't have to practice to failure. What you want to do is practice the move as slowly as it takes to DO THE MOVE PERFECTLY. AND, DO IT PERFECTLY OVER AND OVER. When you start to feel a little fatigue you want to stop and do something else. I might practice a hour, but not an hour on one thing unless I am in the learning phase. Once I have the move down correctly I will do it in short sessions of as little as five minutes or as long as 30, but then switch to something else. I just worked out a routine in which I have to Retention Vanish two quarters and end with both Classic Palmed in the R.H. This is NOT an easy move as it must be silent on the palm! I do it maybe 50 times a night during a two hour practice session watching tv. I hope to have it wired in about another 3-5 weeks.
Perfect Practice is the only thing that makes perfect. Go slow. BEst,
Brad Burt

Thank you all,
Now I have some "senses" when my finger touch the deck. I think that I need more and more practices to make DL perfect. Thanks again! Biing |
