In London last weekend I saw Chris Korn perform a matrix routine with his hands suspended above the coins...and mentioning "shadows" in the patter. Of course everyone was floored. Is this the basis for Shadow Coins? If so, then what pub has a good explanation of this incredible effect? Thanks.

Shadow coins is a bare handed coin assembly. Coins are put in a square format, hands hover over the coins and one at a time the coins travel from under one hand to another to eventually wind up all in one corner.
Shadow Coins is the name Michael Ammar gave his routine which is simply a gaffed version of David Roth's routine Chink-a-Chink. You can see David Roth's original version in his book or Expert coin Magic vol. 1 video. Michael Ammar's version Shadow Coins is on his Easy to Master Money Miracles Vol. 2 |

I have seen Dan Fleschman lecture one time, and he performed a bare-handed matrix effect/reverse ending. I thought it was good, but I still favor a two card method. Something about popping those cards I love Probably because that's about as often I as perform with cards.

Is this the trick Criss Angel did on his special?

Just by the by...
If you're looking for yet another explanation of the Ammar handling for his Shadow Coins, it's also available as the first effect that he presents/explains on his 1995 "Magic, Mastery, & You" video. Michael credits David Roth's "Chinese Coin Assembly" which was originally printed in David's lecture notes in 1977. The method that both David and Michael use to move the coins around was first published by Derek Dingle. So there you go... probably more info than you ever cared to know about Shadow Coins (without, of course, revealing the method!) |

Thanks for the info once again Dan.
Is there any reason for it being done on the floor? |
|||||||||
Dan Watkins Inner circle PA 3028 Posts |
Because Roth did it on a table, and if Ammar didn't go to the floor it wouldn't be a new trick I guess
Half-kidding aside, on the floor eliminates the ability for someone to guess he dropped an extra coin in his lap (lapping). On the floor there is nowhere for an extra coin to go - thus Ammar needed a gaff coin. The addition of the gaff and the move from the table to the floor is all that is different from Roth's version. |

I think there is another reason, Dan. I am a bit reluctant to give Mike his dues, but I think of all the effects I have seen him "improve", this is by far and away the BEST improvement he has made to an effect. It turned a good assembly into (when done properly) a truly magical one. The reason is that the illusion of real height of the hands above the coins can only be done on the floor. If you did the same moves on the table, it would flash from most angles, but with the spectators standing and watching from above, the bad angles are all removed. It makes for very powerful magic indeed.

Hi,
Doing it on the floor, he was able to make it look like he was holding his hands a lot higher over the coins than he was! Ie: not touching them. If you do the move at that angle on the table it will flash like hell! . So the angles are a lot better when they are looking down. That's how the name Shadow coins came about, "I just cast a Shadow over the coins." When he was frist showing it about, everyone thought he was not touching the coins but holding his hands a foot or so above them! Best David Neighbors The Coinjurer |

Chris and Dave,
Thanks for catching my oversight - Ammar specifically explains this on his tapes as his reason for doing it. |

Chad Long recently showed me a one handed version of shadow coins (ala Rene Levand). It was so funny to watch, and looked awesome.

One more tidbit. I was at an Ammar lecture some time ago, where he performed this trick, and he said he did the shadow coins for an Arab shiek, and the guy gave him a blank check, and told him to put any amount on it, just to teach him the effect. He refused, and said he regrets it now. Wow.

Carpeted floor. Ammar suggests testing your floor surface before you perform
|

It is very important if you are doing the effect and you do not have a mat to check the carpet. This involves more than just looking at the texture and deciding. You literally have to go down at some point and run your hand over the surface. You will find over the course of experimentation that some fibres can catch the coin and inhibit the move, dirt makes it more difficult, etc. Check before you start, or it may be a red-cheeked moment when the friction of the surface is less than accomodating!

I'm always amazed that the subject of Shadow Coins comes up that someone doesn't mention John Kennedy's Coins Across routine so I will...
It's just as magical and the effect is more clear cut as the coins simply travel from a row on the left to a row on the right. No jumping around. The coins remain on the table just as in Chink-A-Chink/Shadow Coins. He even includes a method for an instant backfire ending. |

Different effect really. There is no illusion of having never touched the coins. With shadow coins there is. This makes for a distinctly different effect in the audiences mind. I have done one after the other (John's and then Mike's) and the response just proves that they appreciate that the idea that the coins can move "without you having to touch them" as a natural progression from translocation.
