I'm sure he could have used his mad bullet catching skills if it has come to that.
The most telling part of that story is where it goes, "Copperfield said Tuesday between his two shows in Sunrise. "I'm pretty good under pressure. That's my job. But I had two young ladies with me." Tad sexist, discounting rape (which accounts for 6% of violent crime in American) men are more often the victim of violent crime than women. The whole thing reaks of hype and it'll be interesting to see what comes about it court in about a year or two, if it ever makes it that far.

Bitterman,
This won't ever go to trial. Knowing who they're dealing with now, chances are their attorney will strongly advise them to plea out. Robert

Call it what you want, I still call it a publicity stunt. A darn good one too. 4 seperate threads within the Café alone..
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

G Divad,
Except for one problem...filing a false police report is a crime. Copperfield would have a warrant issued and he'd be arrested. Robert

Robert, I think you're overreacting. Do you REALLY think that this story hasn't been embellished somewhat? And nobody is being critical or claiming it didn't happen. We're only suspicious of the the claim of a magical aspect to the whole thing.
And if you want to talk about our "disgusting behavior", you have to take into account that the catalyst for the entire incident has been Mr. Copperfield himself taking to the soapbox. If is was so distraught over this, he wouldn't take to the airwaves. Hey, it was a great publicity angle that worked. What's the problem? |

FROM TODAY'S POST
Commentary: Heist tarnishes Copperfield's magical sheen By Frank Cerabino Palm Beach Post Columnist Friday, April 28, 2006 A dispatch from the future... There hadn't been this sort of media attention for a local trial since William Kennedy Smith went out for a night on the town with his Uncle Ted. Media from around the world are here to see the "David Copperfield: Tornado of Justice!" trial — the master magician's standing-room-only show set to open inside a Palm Beach County courtroom. Copperfield's magic has been, in many ways, magical for Palm Beach County, which has turned the April 2006 armed robbery of the illusionist and his two assistants into a cottage industry. On that fateful night, Copperfield ended a six-show run at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach and went with his assistants for a late-night dinner in nearby CityPlace. On their walk back to the Kravis, they were robbed at gunpoint by four teenagers in a car. The two women with Copperfield gave up what they had, but the magician later told how he thwarted the youths with an empty-pockets illusion — even though his pockets contained a cellphone, a passport and a wallet. "Call it reverse pickpocketing," he told Jose Lambiet of The Palm Beach Post. Copperfield's "magic," however, came into question when the 911 tape disclosed that the youths made off with Copperfield's passport. Duel of mind tricks, with attorneys Fans who were used to his amazing feats — walking through the Great Wall of China; making the Statue of Liberty disappear; escaping from the prison on Alcatraz Island — were disappointed. "You'd think he could make the handguns disappear out of those teenagers' hands," fans muttered. This has led Copperfield on a quest to regain his magical authority in Palm Beach County. One month after the armed robbery, Copperfield issued a news release that he would be flying in for his grand jury testimony. Without a plane. "Grand Jury! Grand Illusion!" is believed to be the first time in local history where a witness levitated in front of a grand jury. Copperfield promised to do even more amazing feats of magic during the trial of the teens, who are represented by legal wizard Richard Lubin. "I can't wait to show Copperfield the magic of reasonable doubt," Lubin said. Lubin said the defense would be that the teens were either (a) master illusionists pretending to be robbers, (b) legally insane or (c) extremely diabetic. "Copperfield's not the only guy with the smoke and mirrors," Lubin said. Can he remaster disappearing acts? Copperfield insisted on participating in the selection of the jury, choosing not to ask questions, but to vanish the prospective jurors he didn't trust, making them somehow reappear on a standing-room-only PalmTran bus to Belle Glade. The spectators in the courtroom gasped in appreciation, and Copperfield was later approached by lawyers from The Scripps Research Institute, who refused to say what they discussed with the magician. Speculation is rampant about what the magician will do while on the witness stand during the "David Copperfield: Tornado of Justice!" trial. Circuit Judge Peter Blanc cautioned jurors to avoid all the hoopla surrounding the case. "You must concentrate all your attention to the testimony coming from the witness stand," the judge cautioned jurors, "and not on, say, whether Mr. Copperfield makes a Boeing 747 appear in the courtroom." In other news, county officials were befuddled to learn today that The Scripps Research Institute has disappeared from Jupiter. Cerabino jokes, but the 911 tape about the passport has to make you wonder if DC actually did put the women's life at risk by hiding his stuff as he claimed, or if he just turned it over as commanded.

I think it was the great Archie Bunker who said, 'Give everyone getting on a plane a gun and then the highjackers will be too scared to pull their's out'.

Bitterman,
more truth to that than you realize. Time after time you hear about criminals being interviewed and asked what they're most afraid of in committing their crimes...and time after time it isn't "going back to jail," or "getting caught." What they usually fear most is attacking an armed citizen. That is very telling. Robert

What is your source for this 'time after time'? It is an interesting story.

Now before anyone says anything...yes, this is a link to the NRA's page, BUT - the report is from an outside source, the US Dept. of Justice. The fear caused by facing an armed citizen can deter violent crimes. Robert

One NRA spin on a National Institute of Justice report does not make 'time after time' and if you take the time to read the NRA article you find some rather despotic thinking. When asked, most people would strongly agree that getting shot at is a bad thing, but your question; 'asked what they're most afraid of in committing their crimes' was not asked in this report.
Please point me to the report that backs up your statement. I love to learn new things. Thanks.
