I have seen these in the catalogs, but never once heard anyone talk about them. The ads say Thurston and Houdini used them. I am kind of thinking they are like full face flippers but don't have a clue. Does anyone use them and what are they?

It's good to see I'm not alone. I'm going to order a set today and see what they are. It looks like they come in half dollars and English Pennys.

I looked to see if I could find any information on them myself... to me, they looked more like a casino coin set, but I could be way off... Do you know if the set comes with two or four coins??? In the picture provided, I would rule out flipper coins, because you would end with two sided coins. If it is what I suspect, you may be able to use them with a Raven... I could be way off though. Let us know what you think!

They are on the hot sheet for cheap, right now. So are cap and pence with the faux leather cap. Also expanded shells are on the cheap. Don't think they are Johnson though.
here is the hot link: Click Here! I will describe them here, if it can be done without giving up the method.

I look forward to your review... so far, I haven't been dissatisfied with any of my gimmick coins. One of my favorites is China Change... it has actually helped me learn a better classic palm and develop a method of secret transfer.

Are you kidding? China Change and English Express are in every box and bag I have.
There used to be Mexican and Irish express versions, but I don't know if they are still made. How could you find a better opener? Instant, visual, short sleeves, hand out.

I haven't even heard of English Express (I'm checking now). As far as gimicks go, I have
The Alchemist Fantasy Opium Coins Cigarette through half Scotch/Soda China Change Shimmed Half Hopping Halves/Sun & Moon set I would like to get a flipper someday, as well as a magnetic set of Scotch/Soda. I really don't like the Alchemist Fantasy routine, but it did come with a gold plated half (cool), and also a copper/silver coin. I never use the gaffs too much anymore, because I don't ever perform. I just carry coins to work and like to manipulate them, and work out sleights. I've found learning the sleight of hand give more endless possibilities with gaffs. John Eddington |

I've generally found that all gaffs or all sleights will get you busted, but a careful mix of about 50/50 seems to be just right.
Most of the sleights have angle problems, and most of the gaffs leave you a little dirty. BTW, gold plated state quarters are a buck each at the warehouse while they last. I have gaff sets based, on the Half/English Penny (Johnson) and the half/centavo/Chinese (sasco) so they match and are fluid, for handouts etc. Then do almost all the sleights with just halfs. Works for me. This alligator thing has bothered me for quite awhile and it will be over soon.

I know what you mean by being bothered... I love it, and hate it at the same time. What really stinks is when you find something you least expected. I bought an effect for a floating dollar once, and received an interesting idea, but probably not something I couldn't have figured out if I had seen it performed for me. One of those vague descriptions like... The dollar will rise up high off the hand, move forward, then slowly come back down, blah, blah, blah... I got hooked. I paid for a cool idea though, I guess, because it does really intrigue people. I remember the first time I saw a D'light demonstrated for me... I had all kinds of gizmos/lighted ball on elastic lines running through my head... I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened my package. Do you have a set of casino coins? They are really cool. |

No I don't have any casino coins at all.
Can you recommend a set to look at? Gibson?

My favorite set is the simple silver/copper set. Include a shell in the deal and I'll entertain for hours.

Sorry Kingstardog...I have no idea who makes them. I had a friend who had a set, and I was teased with them a lot. A bit pricey for me at the time, and now that I'm married I've found SO much more is too pricey.

I have only been busted with scotch and soda once and only when I showed the opposite side of the centavo. The only other way to see the gaff is to drop it and hear the hollow sound.

Got these last night. Ordered on the 5th and delivered on the 12th is about average from this dealer.
Well, where do I begin. I ordered out of curiosity so anything that happened would have been fine with me. I dumped them out and went for the instructions. It comes with two English Pennies and a gimmicked half and you supply another half. The Effect: Two half dollar coins change to two English Pennies. There are several sleights needed to accomplish this process. Finger palm, thumb palm, a pass, and lapping or ditching. Hint: the gimmick could work like a hooked half, but there is no hook, it bites like an alligator instead. All in all, it was a cheap price to satisfy my "need to know" and make sure I wasn't missing out on anything. Then my buddy John came over. He is going to do the group home and special needs groups with me in the beginning of spring, so we can say he is average to above average in the art. I was working on a custom effect that I am developing and he was digging through the pile of effects that I haven't opened or used to see what was new. Then he spotted the Alligator coins on the shelf so I handed him the package. Quote by John after reading the handling: "It should be illegal to sell something like this! If you can do all the sleights on the instructions you don't need it!" Anyhow, the rest of you can skip these since a chunk of wax will do the same thing.

Hey, no loss. I got a couple fresh English Pennies that are not all banged up and scratched, plus a new idea...

Sorry, KSD,
Now that you've described the stuff you got, I remembered what it was. I could have saved you the investment. On the other hand, there are a few reasons to want something like this: Consider using it as the first "link" in a "linking coins" routine. This will allow you to cleanly link the first two, toss them around as a solid lump, and ditch silently as you ring in the real gaff, which is three coins stuck together. That's the one you hand out for examination. Consider openly showing the gaff, introducing it by wearing it clipped to your lapel or pocket. Later, when doing a routine apparently with this coin, but really a hook coin, the aduience will assume they know how the hoo is hanging from their clothes (obviously I'm talking about a routine where the Hoo is openly stuck on the spectator. See Bill Spooner's "Here's Hoo with Coins". And there's one more use, but I can't recall, so how good could it be? Hope this gives you something to do with it.

Thanks Curtis,
I appreciate the ideas. Really, after playing with it a bit, I left it on the bookshelf where I keep that stuff. Parts, pieces and whole gaffs. I see them most every day and often find ways to put them together into unusual effects. I will pick up a pocket torch and try the linking coins angle too. It also reminded of a couple effects I had forgot about.

Curtis,
What a great idea for a really crappy gimmick. I bought the AC set years ago and it soured me on trick coins. The good news is that it inspired me to buy Bobo's New Modern Coin Magic. It would be a simple matter to use the two coin (Siamese coin?) gimmick exposing only one coin and clip the AC to it. Then expose the clip and apparently reattach it, actually exposing both coins of the SC and pocket the AC as you get a lighter to "weld" the coins together. |
