(04-26) 07:39 PDT West Palm Beach, Fla. (AP) --
David Copperfield has magically escaped getting robbed. The 49-year-old illusionist was walking with two female assistants to their tour bus after his show Sunday at a performing arts center when four teens pulled up in a black car, a police report said. Two armed robbers allegedly got out of the car and demanded the group's belongings. One woman handed over $400 from her pockets and the other gave up her purse with 200 euros, $100, her passport, plane tickets and a cell phone. Copperfield refused to empty his pockets, the report said. Copperfield says he turned his pockets inside out to reveal nothing in them, even though he was carrying his passport, wallet and cell phone. "Call it reverse pickpocketing," Copperfield told The Palm Beach Post for Wednesday's editions. Copperfield read the license plate number of the car to an assistant while she called 911, the report said. Four teenagers were arrested and charged with armed robbery. They were held without bond, police said. The women's property was recovered. ___ |

Reminds me of a story a heard a while back. Some guy tried to rob the magician at gunpoint and he switched his gun with a carrot.

Why does this sound familiar? Like it happened to Blackstone in about 1944?

Man, I hope it's not a BS publicity stunt!

Raphlo, that's exactly what I was thinking!
But kudos to Copperfield for keeping his cool. I guess when you spend 30 years getting paid to fool people, it's not a great stretch to do it once for free. But if he'd been REALLY good, he would have gotten away with the thief's wallet and watch!

If he were a mentalist, he would have known it was going to happen and had the police waiting there.
It may not have been intended as a publicity stunt, but hey, if it happened, make the most of it (just make sure they have the name spelled correctly). Anyway, to keep his cred he would have to say that; otherwise it would be like Mike Tyson complaining that he got mugged on the street. |

He must have been dam good at that hiding things in his pocket thing. After reading this post a couple of days ago I was doing a torn and restored card for my sister's friend I accidently flashed the torn going in my pocket. After the trick he asked if I could turn out my pockets I did what was suggested above and I still got busted. Dam Copperfield show off be better than me *grumble*

Passport, wallet and cell phone... All hiden in his pocket???
His pockets must be way big. Does he walk around with gimmicked coats on at all time? The only way I can see you hiding all those things is with a topit, and even then the weight of the cellphone would have given it away. Not to mention the hole his wallet must have made!!! ku7uk |
