Quote: One US dollar equals 2,144.60 bolivares in Venezuela or about 22 bolivares to a penny. $.14 equals 308 bolivares. I wonder what the average hourly wage is in Venezuela. I read this morning that taxi driver in Caracas uses about 19 gallons (72 liters) of gas a day in his '76 Chevy Nova and he paid $2.30 to fill up his tank. That equals out to 4,950 Bolivares in his currency. HMMM...

Quote: I beg to differ on that comment because Venezuela sells 1.2 million barrels of oil a day to the U.S. President Chavez of Venezuela has extended their fuel subsidy that offers 40% discounts on heating oil distributed by Venezuelan-owned refiner Citgo.

Perhaps I should clarify, not having intended any sort of confiscation of Venezuelan petrol. Rather, it seemed to me that if US buyers would offer slightly more than $0.14/gallon, the Venezuelan refiners, responding to the Invisible Hand of the Marketplace, would naturally send their wares northward.
Good point about the cost of liberating hydrogen from water molecules -- I do seem to recall the prof droning on about the reaction's energy deficit. Acetylene, however, requires no input energy; calcium carbide reacts with water to produce heat and gas. Nasty, dangerous, potent gas. Perhaps some other commercial drawback? Biomass distillation looks good on paper -- although like Payne, I'm unsure about the energy cost-to-benefit ratio. |

So instead of them responding to the marketplace and raping their enviroment for a quick buck they are trying to use their resources resposibly. Something we here in the US should have been at least thinking about for several decades. Unfortunately it's only when we get into the middle of a crisis that we start seriously thinking about altering the way we do things here.

The price of gas has become so expensive here in Canada that I've sold my van and walk to my shows (round trip!).
...And, if you beieve that I have a nice golden bridge waiting to be sold... I admit, it is "expensive". Here's raising a cup in the hope that prices come down soon... Jonathan
