Question for folks who memorize card decks. I've posted about this previously, but I'm using a mixture of Dominic Obrien's system and Bob Farmer's mnemonics to memorize shuffled cards (currently around 26 cards in 3 minutes or so).
I've got several 52 step journeys mapped out in my head, but I'm finding that even with 26 cards, the old deck orders "stick", and I'm mentally mixing old images along each stop with the newer images. I've tried to sorta "flood" out the journey (literally -- in my head -- washing water over everything erase all the images) -- but I'm finding that the method I'm using is (apparently) very powerful. I mean, I can remember 3 different sets of 26 cards several days after I first memorized them. This makes it increasingly difficult to practice, obviously. So my question is this: for those that are doing this, how do you "erase" the stops along your journey? How do you make yourself forget the images? (And do you ever worry about running out of "journeys?" Do you make up fictitious ones? I know Dominic says he used 35 journeys to memorize 35 decks. That seems more worrisome to me than memorizing the cards!) |

Boinko - I currently use three different journeys; each one for a different purpose. I have found that by simply and quickly running over the journey and visualizing it empty, it helps to erase the short term card memory. I don't mean visualizing the card disappearing (or, in your case, washing it away - I think that just reinforces the image). Rather, simply visualize the various steps as "empty."
I have also found by switching between various memory systems, even for a portion of the deck, seems to purge the old images. By the way, you can increase the storage capacity for your journey, decrease your journey size and, I believe increase your speed, as well, by memorizing two or three cards at each step/stage. If you have the AS and 3C at step one, for example, you would imagine Arnold S. driving your car which happens to look like Charlie Chaplin's top hat . . . or Arnold has a top hat on . . . or Arnold has Charlie's cane and moustache, etc. Enjoy. - Scott |
