I've seen lots of tricks with double sided cards, but are there any good ones with double sided coins? I have a double-tailed quarter and a double-headed quarter, and I'm just too honest to use them for illicit gain. But it would be sweet to be able to do some tricks with them. Has anyone published any? Any new ideas?

Jay Sankey has a great effect based on a classic trick on 22 blows to the head called "symbolic." This uses a double headed coin. It's probably one of my favorites on the tape. Check it out.

David Roth has a nice prediction routine that uses a double-faced coin.
I believe it's in his Ultimate Coin Magic, Volume 1, look HERE. SETH

Janus Predictions?
Hey Stannmaple, Sankey has a very cool effect where a coin goes back in time. Is this the same one? All the best, Kranzo

I think he refers to the one were coins get discarted by random and the prediction is the last coin

Yes, I was refering to the prediction effect. I'm not familiar with his effect where a coin goes back in time. In symbolic, it is an effect with shapes drawn on coins and a prediction is made... well I shouldn't tell the whole effect. It will probably give too much away, but it is an EXCELLENT trick. I've done it a couple times without a double headed coin. It's not needed, but it helps.

Janus Predictions involves using 4 dbls along with approx. 12 regulars and you are able to make 3 different predictions. John |

Check out an incredible routine using a double sided coin called "the magic coin" on John George's DVD "close-up magic, vol.1". Double sided routines are often prediction effects, this one is not and has fooled a lot of magicians (except the one's that have just read this post).

There's a Gary Kurtz routine involving the transposition of the spectator's quarter with the magician's (which has the word "Mine" written on it) while it's not necessary, a doubleheader makes this a bit more deceptive for the faithful few who pay close attention. It's in "Unexplainable Acts".
Reed McClintock published a very strange routine in Genii a couple of years ago. You draw four dots on a single quarter, and they gather together, ala "Matrix". This uses at least one of these gaffs, as I recall. Also, Café member and "Tubthumping" author Bill Duncan has an as-yet unpublished effect (but it's about to be, check with him for the latest) that uses these coins in yet another odd way. In it,he uses these coins to solve a nagging coin magic problem. And Jonathan will remember, long ago I worked out an effect with a specific type of doubleheader, with a hole or two drilled through. Doug's right, the John George routine is well worth considering, as is his whole DVD. Finally, you can find here and there references to the following idea: Take a larger doubleheader and wax a penny to one side. You can now vansh the penny by flipping the big coin over. How you handle that is up to you. Good luck with this.

I had forgot the Kurtz effect. That is a good one!
Nate - sorry I missed your lecture here in San Diego - I was out of town myself. Maybe next time. I think I remember some kind of "dragging a hole" effect using a double sided coin in Magic or Genii, called "hole in the head". It got a lot of flak because of the title (because of where the hole was placed on the coin). You then dragged it off the president's profile by flipping the coin over while dragging your fingers across, simulating moving the hole. Shuttle the coin to switch it out. You get the idea . . . |
