I perform primarly for adults as 'con artist' and most of my routines are themed around the idea of Trust. I'd like to strengthen this theme within the show and as such have made a list of different styles of routines in which Trust plays a role.
* The performer trusts his safety to a chance/higher power. e.g. Shattered * The performer trusts his safety to an audience member. e.g. other knife monte routines. * Explorations of lying. e.g. comedy lie detectors or Marc Salem's presentation of sneak thief. * The audience member trusts themselves. e.g. Barrie Richardson's the falling cup * Trust in gambling. e.g. the shell and pea game * An audience member trusts a piece of equipment. e.g. arm choppers. What other types of routines do you think Trust plays a role in? |

The whole point of "con" games is the word "con" which is short for "confidence." The confidence man must instill trust in the mark, in order for the con to work.
Re: doing Shattered, then the knife board --- That's like doing the ACR with a red deck, then ACR with a blue deck. However, there is a knife board routine in Final Curtain that would do exactly what you want, and you wouldn't need to bring two sets of props. There is Russian Roulette with poison. Again, there is a routine in the same book that takes an interesting twist on this.

Sorry Bill _ I should have been clearer. This is NOT a list of routines within an act. Instead, it is a list of different types of routines and how they relate to trust.
Whilst shatters and knife board are similar to an audience, the issues of trust they explore are very different. |

That depends on the knife board routine. There are many different versions of the knife board, and there are many different ways to perform "Shattered." Don't limit your interpretation to the one that comes in the box.
Since you haven't explored Final Curtain, then you don't understand what I mean. If you have ever seen Joel Bauer, you know that his knife board is done as a "spectator trust" version. There is no reason you couldn't do exactly the same thing with Shattered. Or Smash and Stab. Or any of the other versions of this. I have an idea for a version of this that would encompass both ideas, but I'm not ready to tip it yet. BTW, there is only one bottle used in my version.

I don't need to be aware of a specific routine to understand that different versions of different routines can be performed in different ways.
In this thread I was more interested in dicussing type of routines and effects rather then specfic themes. Those I mentioned were meant only as examples. Knife boards/shattered/russion roulette can all explore Trust in different ways... for exmaple... * The magicians must trust the spectator followed the position of the bottle. * The magician must trust their instincts as to the position. * The magicians must trust a higher powered to guide them. One interesting difference between shattered and many other knife board routines is that shattered does not the magician to trust his safety to a gimmick. Many knife board routines require a hell of a lot of faith in electronics, mechanics etc! |
