Has anyone noticed the mistake Ammar makes in the Queen's Soiree effect in ETMCM Vol. 6? It comes right after the second queen appears under the postcard (the first appearance of a queen joining the one already in the upper left corner). Instead of loading the queen which is concealed under the hank he immediately lays the postcard back down on the two queens at his upper left. When he lifts the hank to put the next queen underneath you can clearly see the outline of the queen still under the hank (the queen that he forgot to load under the postcard).
Now before anyone gets their undies in a bind, I am bringing this up not as a criticism of Ammar but as a learning opportunity. He covers his (large) mistake with patter, "... in the cardboard universe it's not polite to leave them face to face like that", as he draws the fourth queen back out and lays it down, takes the postcard with his left hand (which is holding the third queen under the hank) and turns the face down queen face up to match his patter line. Now with the third queen properly loaded under the postcard he lays it on the other two queens in his upper left corner and finishes the effect. This is the product of deep experience. Rather than getting flustered he is able to cover his mistake quite fluidly. Something to aspire to... P.S. There is an effect on his ETMMM series where he is palming a coin and his thumb juts out at a right angle ala Tom Robbins "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues". See if you can find it (it is one where he is kneeling as I recall). |

I love Mr Ammar's work but no magi is perfect . you can find errors in everyones routine if examine hard enough . Look at ECMTM Vol 1 and look at Triumph performance and see if you can point out the flub there but it glides ( no sleight intended) right by spectators..
Keep up the good work Michael!!

Isn't it so that the spectators in all those kind of videos are hired?
just a question. I see for example always the same audiences on every DVD etc. |

Michael (IMO) is probably the best pure teacher out there. L&L should have re-shot that and maybe added it at the end as an outtake. We pay to see how it's done & I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with mediocre production values.
Please let me clarify: As we all make mistakes, it is L&L's responsibility to correct these issues before they put them on the market. As long as I'm ranting, I really wish magazines & catalog publishers would use competent humans to proofread...sorry... Joe

Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're probably right. |

Personally I would love to see more "outtakes". How do guys handle mistakes "under fire"? Anyone else?

The mistake was not completely obvious and wasn't even a big one.
I disagree with JoeFreedom and anyone you is critical of what happened. Not to sound like I'm worshipping Ammar or anything but he did an amazing feat. He gathered the best of the classic material of the time, changed with with some help, and then performed them all on 9 volumes of dvd, that have become one of the best selling magic dvd sets of all time. After all those long hours of shooting, you are bound to make at least one mistake. In fact if you watch the dvds enough times you can ctach even more mistakes but should that be what you are looking for. Its very annoying how people esspecially on the Café are so critical of every trick/book.dvd that comes out on the market. It was said several times in this thread that no magi is perfect. Well to add, no person is perfect. The point of magic is to learn and perform or whatever else you want to do with it. Be critical on yourself and not other people, and esspecially Michael Ammar. He did a fantastic job and did some really good tricks on those dvds that have changed the way people think and do magic. baldr6797- And to your original post. I think I know what you are talking about, and there is a point in the effect where it looks like a mistake but it really isn't. He does the trick well. And even so, you said that we should be learning and not be critical. Well I have to comments to that, 1) If you are not intending this post to be critical then why call it "Ammar's flub." That means you are being critical if I understand it right. 2)The mistake in the routine is so minor and very unnoticeable and unless you have watched it several times that there is not much to learn from. If you want to learn from a mistake, then do a performance and have someone video tape it, or have some be critical of your work, not of Michael Ammar. and my last comment MichielTummers- Yes the spectator's are hired to watch the magic. And as funny and weird as it may seem. Its a grueling and hard job. Lake Tahoe is an island with few people on it. L&L has to get a variety of laymen to sit in one place and watch magic for 8 hours a day. Think about it. When you go to the average magic show its abot 1-2 hours. After that it becomes very overwhelming and "o no, not another card trick". Well watching magic and TONS of card trick for many hours a day continuously makes people restless, and tired. Also they have to be an enthusiastic crowd for the whole time even if it is boring or weak material. And for Michael Ammar making 9 dvds. Think about how many hours on shooting alone. And then think about the laymen. There are bound to be some mistakes, and they won't waste time film or energy for such a minor thing. Imagine all that, and then people around the country will be seeing that hard work, and putting it down, or criticizing every wrong move. that's messed up just my two centavos |
