Pete,
You really seem to have it out for the Shoelace trick. Why so much animosity? You've posted about it in at least three different forums. Just because something is easy for magicians to figure out doesn't mean it's a bad trick. In fact, it's a very good one. Say what you want, but I have gotten absolutely killer reactions with this effect. It's offbeat, it's real-world, it appears completely spontaneous to the spectators. Exactly the kind of magic I love. And, frankly, I'd rather spend $20 for well-made gimmick to be sent to me than to drive all over town and spend the equivalent of $100 of my time and effort to make it up myself. It's convenient for me and I like that. Y'know, I was able to figure out the coins across using a shell when I saw it, but does that make it "dopey" or a bad trick?
It's all in the reflexes.

Some of you seem to think that the Shoelace effect is being marketed and profited by Blaine. It is not. The only thing Blaine had to do with the effect was performing it on TV. The effect was produced by Penguin Magic, who saw the profitablity in the item and decided NOT to keep it exclusive to Penguin, as they do with so many of their self-produced, second rate effects. They released the product for distribution and is distributed by Murphy's Magic. This is where Ellusionist, New Concepts Magic, Magic City, and countless other dealers are getting it. There is no deal between Blaine and these dealers...they're buying their supply from distributors.
I find it funny that on the instructional DVD, Noblezada talks about "other things" you can do with this effect, and says, "...and don't even THINK of doing a color-changing lace...I've already thought of that one, too." Hmmph...what an a&&hol@. |

Can You believe this? http://www.trickshop.com has a video of the shoelace trick with the explanation for anyone to see. I do not think this is a good thing but rather a blatant scheme to buy from this site.

I've also been wondering why no one here has pointed out the quote on deeperblue.net in which Paul Kotik says: "So, you ask, what about that 7:08 breath-hold ? Seven minutes, eight seconds. Pretty good apnea time for a national-class AIDA competitor under ideal conditions. What’s up with that ? Simple. It was magic." This quote is on the website of the divers who assisted Blaine in his stunt |
