It's been said and done in other threads, I am sure. I use the cheapest wand for my cups and balls...currently a custom tiger eye maple/chechen wand that Shamrock (now defunct, I believe) made for me. I keep a Thomas Wayne "Malone" wand and two beautiful Porper wands on display only with my magic collection...these are too nice to use and wear down.

I use a simple plastic wand that sells for about $2. It looks good, is inexpensive and will take a fair amount of abuse as long as you don't use it as an ice pick. It also makes a good loud noice when struck against my brass Cups & Balls set, without scratching or damaging the cups themselves. The only downside is that it's not really heavy enough for a Wand Spin (which I can't do anyway).
I buy two or three at a time, so I always have some backups if I lose or break one. I've tried more expensive wooden and metal wands, but actually prefer the lighter plastic one. SETH

I think the audience expects you to have the wand (and often we need it). The rest is just showmanship and personal taste. The magician is who makes the magic.

I use a very exclusive wand made by Tim Star, a very "good" looking wood wand: the wand has a magnet inbuilt in one of the ends.

I just saw the customer wands by Magic Makers and they look very nice. Very heavy and well made.

I've never used a commercial wand: I'm a very firm believer in hand-made whenever possible. Since I've also been a poor student for quite a few years now (tip: Don't go to grad school unless you LOVE school!), I've never purchased a wand: they've always been made by my hands (though I do lust after some of the beautiful hand-turned, brass-tipped wands that some folks mention here from time to time).
I've made them out of quite a few exotic woods, when I've been able to come by them, and some not so exotic. I've used rose (not rosewood, but rose -- just try finding a rosebush big enough to have strong enough wood!), ash, eucalyptus, red oak, pine, "King's Wood" (I have no idea what it is . . . apparently it's some sort of incredibly rare wood that one of my fountain-pen-making wood-turning friends uses -- species I know not). My favourite wand (which I have since mislaid) was an of a piece of unfinished, cloth-sanded tulip tree wood. I spent some time looking for the perfect branch (ca. 1/2" diameter, with at least fourteen inches of razor-straight length), debarked it, beveled the ends, and "sanded" it with some stiff cloth until I had a satin finish worked out of it. It was beautiful. *sniff* The wand I currently use is a sixteen-inch lightweight sanded cane wand. I'll have to post pictures when I finish it (it is as yet natural, and I'm going to put an oil rub on it as soon as my linseed varnish is done in the sun). It's got a slight taper from end to end, with an oblique domed top and bottom. The bottom has a natural cavity (I cut it slightly on the upside of the node) with a very small hole. I think (though I haven't tried it yet) that it would be a good way to carry s**t for "a certain card effect". Cheers! Keith
