Can anyone here advise me as to how I can erase the indices off a regular bicycle playing card? I've heard that we can use steel wool or an eraser - but what type of eraser can do that? Also, wouldn't steel wool scratch the finish on the card itself? Thanks in advance!

Try acetone instead. No scratches, but must be re-finished (surface coating).

Thanks for your advice - what would be an easily available source for acetone? And how can you surface coat a playing card? Thanks again!

Acetone is something you would find at either a painting supply store or a boat building and refinshing shop.
Acetone melts plastic, so it's usually in a 1 litre metal can. You would refinish the cards with a clear gloss acrylic spray, available again at a painting supply store or a large hobby supply shop. Krylon, Dupli-Color, Testors and Tremco all make clear acrylic sprays. There are many others. You want to keep the area you're wiping with acetone as small as possible, and then make a matte to put over the area and lightly spray the dulled surface until it matches the rest of the finish on the card. It's better to use two or three extremely light coats rather than a single heavy one. |

You can get acetone at any Ace Hardware store. Not sure about any other source for refinishing, tho.

Another source for acetone is finger nail polish remover.
Yes, that is my real name. Yes, I am a real person. No, you probably won't agree with me.

One thing to look out for if you're using fingernail polish remover (besides the fact that you're paying a 10000% mark up on acetone) is that in response to health concerns there are now a lot of fingernail polishes that DON'T have acetone as a solvent base, and the remover for them doesn't contain acetone, and won't work on your cards.
(Acetone is an extremely dangerous solvent to get on your skin. It's in the family of keytones, and like all keytones it goes right through your skin and into your bloodstream). |
