I was wandering aimlessly around Wal-Mart one recent night when I stumbled into to toy aisle to see what they had for the grandkids. While there, I found they had a toy cash register drawer complete with money. Now the coins and paper currency are smaller than normal, but they bear a striking resemblance to the real thing. Especially the dollar bills--which come in $1's, $5's, $10's and $20's.
Anyway, the whole darn thing was less than $2--and it game me some immediate ideas on some interesting effects. I immediately bought two of them and began my devilment. I left one in the package and put it over by the dinner table. With the other one, I went about making up some secret gaffs and planting them where I could get to them. Okay, at the next big family meal, son-in-law sees the toy and picks it up. I tell him I picked it up so we could start teaching the kids the value of money. It was just too perfect a set up. I start doing a number of tricks with the plastic coins--sort of over the grandkids heads, but the adults were having fun with it. But when I took the mini-dollars and started to do some bill switches (remember, I planted them for easy palms/steals in advance)--well that drove them nuts. And when a mini-$20 turned into a REAL $20, I thought they'd go nuts. Anyway, the possibilities with this thing are really endless, with or without gaffs. And at less than $2, you could even consider leaving it sealed in the package at the beginning of the session. The point here is that we spend a lot of dough on tricks and gaffs and sometimes forget the most obvious of possibilities. I think the fact that it is a child's toy is a great foundation on which to build an adult routine. It would likely work for older children, although most 5 year olds don't have a really good grasp of money, so I think the effect would be lost on them. I'm thinking about making up a 3-D Cash/Hundley 500 gaff with this and some other things...it's just too much fun...and as stated earlier, I think the potential is enormous. If you're in Wal-Mart, check it out. For under $2, I think you'll be impressed. BooRadley |
