Have any buskers done any mentalism effects? If so, which ones? Has anyone done an entire mentalism act busking? At first glance it would seem extremely difficult, given the typical busking conditions. Maybe comedy mentalism?

I'm sure someone's tried. I know that a guy here in town wanted to do a Bizarrist show on the street, but it was the general consensus that because you need time to build a story up, that it wouldn't work as well.
Yes, that is my real name. Yes, I am a real person. No, you probably won't agree with me.

I'm working on that theme right now. It has to be entertaining, visual, and engaging. I'm not going to put my act on the Café, but it is light/comical in presentation, but the effects are solid and hit between the eyes. The ending has the danger element to keep the crowd. I won't know how successful it is until I try it out in a few weeks. Right now I'm just refining the presentation. Tony |

I attended a Lee Earle lecture this past week and he has a routine very similar to that where he uses a P**k wa***t. Uses the same mathematical (sp) ending. Very strong and would probably work in any situation.
We all loved it as well. All the best

Whit Haydn has a GREAT mental bit to do when it's raining outside and you still want to make some money for the day.
It's a one trick busk and can be done in a bus station, train station, or in line where people are just hanging around. It'll get you a 5 or 10 almost every time. I can't get Whit's store to open at the moment, but you can find the bit in his "Street Magic" manuscript. Since the link is not working, just check with Whit at: http://www.whithaydn.com. Highly recommended. |

Back in my busking period, I did a mentalism act for a while and, if done in the right way (and it took me about a month to work it out!), it CAN kill.
The BIGGEST problem with a mentalism busk is the initial draw in my opinion. For me, it was either using a Tossed Out Deck (risky - I had thee of them "grow legs and leave in the first week before I figured out how to keep that from happening) or by going into a Blindforl routine, right away. With the blindfold, you HAVE to have someone watch your things for you because, with some crowds, your gear will tend to become VERY mobile and suddenly decide to run off with someone it has bonded to! Once you have pulled in the tip, you can go into your act and then into the hat pass. And, if you do something really strong, such as a six card ESP match ala HOY or a REALLY strong book test finale or, finding someone who has handed you their watch or whose name you just duplicated on a whiteboard as they wrote theirs on another (while blindfolded) - in the crowd - you can pull some pretty respectable hats. My personal best was at a Ren Faire on the Illinois Wisconsin border (when the Faire was only in its second year or so) and I pulled in something like $300 for one performance! THAT was a GOOD day - as it was about 1975! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Thanks Nick!-appreciated
Kenneth Lightfoot!!- really knew how to play the crowd with this effect & fabulous humour, Was 1 of the more impressive effects & as mentioned played very strong for all audiences! Depends so much on the personality of the performer I guess!! Cheers!!-Brent |
