Hey guys... I just want to share with you a presentational stubtlety that removes the risk of somebody handing you a state quarter. It's one thing to trust your spectators enough not to check the date on the coin, but it's another when the bent coin you return to them is either a different state - or worse, an eagle coin.
So if you borrow coins (to bend, stick cigarettes thru, etc), here one way to avoid that issue completely. Tell the spectator: "I'd like to borrow a quarter, but it has to be one of those old eagle-quarters. When they changed to state quarters, they actually changed the consistency of the metal in a way that makes what I'm about to do impossible. I'm still not totally sure what the difference is, but does anyone have an eagle-quarter?" You just ask them for the kind of quarter you want! But you do in such a way that 1) removes suspicion from the request, and 2) actually ADDS credibility to the routine as a whole, almost along the lines of the Too-Perfect Theory. Anyway, you can use it or not, but I recommend all coin-benders try it out and see how naturally it fits into the rest of the patter. Thanks for reading! |

That's a good idea, and it's been suggested here by others, as well. Given that the State quarters seem thinner and less substantial than the eagles, perhaps it would be more interesting to claim that those "new, tin quarters" don't present enough of a challange, or they just break.

I'm glad I read this post because I have drifted away from routines that use quarters. I know I’ll use this idea, thanks Tyler!!

I use this approach all the time when performing bite-out quarter using Bobo's switch.

Very nice! I was considering the triple effect listed in Peek Performances where you ask a spectator for any silver coin (nickel, dime or quarter). If presented with a new quarter, I need some way out. Perhaps asking for any silver coin but please NONE OF THE NEW THIN CHEAP QUARTERS.
I was going to ask for a penny, nickel or dime which I guess I could still do but asking for any silver coin is a better sublety.

Perhaps ask the person to bring out all the coins from his pocket. Search through them and take it from there. IMHO this removes 1)further requests and 2)possible suspicion. I guess credibility comes into play when you seem to meticulously search for just the right coin. No words needed at this stage. Maybe a short phrase like, " Ah, this coin seem just right" or something like that. Credibility also depends on the trick before this. If you are comming from a sucker/fooled ya kinda trick, then nothing could make the next effect credible. Just a thought!
If in case there is no state quarter available, I would proceed with another coin effect. All the best, Rannie aka The Boss aka The Manila Enforcer

Here is my solution to "borrowing" the right kind of quarter.

You can also just ask if any one has some coins, and then just grab one from a handfull, either faking the take alltogether, or just finding one similar.

I've read the same idea here plenty of times
Or.. Say you have a DE coin, and somebody hands you an eagle coin, or any other coin without looking at it.. Just look at the back of the coin and say "Oh, a Deleware quartar.. I don't have any of those yet" - Suggested by Daniel Garcia. |

When I get handed a state quarter I say, "What's this, Canadian?, anyone have a real quarter with the eagle on the back."
