I don't know if something like this is commonly used in magic. I spoke with a few magicians and they couldn't point me in the right direction. I am looking for a nylon reel that is pinnable inside the coat, that will slowly reel thread in. I live in Las Vegas and I know there are a few magicians who build custom gimmicks here, I was wondering if a Café member could point me in the right direction in finding a person who does this. Again, I would be wearing it in the coat so it couldn't be too large, I believe there are items like this that are built into tables and such but the size would presumably be too big for my use...
Thanks again, DJ |

Hi Pete,
I need 45" of strong (only strong enough to pull a silk and to not worry about breakage), as invisible as possible thread. I need it to be quite slow, I don't know if this is totally correct but lets say an inch a second. As light as possible and as small as possible. It will be pinned inside the coat. I have a very small figure so I don't need anything too big. As well I would like it to be the opposite in working from a reel. I would like to press a button for it to work, when the button is released, it stops retracting. So I would be pushing it through the coat with my hand and when I stop pushing it would stop, then I would push the "Button" and it would reel again, and stop when I stop. I hope all makes sense. You can modify a servo to revolve 360 degrees. That would be a very slow reel that you can start and stop with a switch. Do you need it wind in both directions?

Hi timothy,
I do not need it to revolve in both directions. The thread would be extended throughout my act untill I needed it then I would like to begin the process of operation. Do you have any more information on the product you suggested? I have no idea what it is. Thanks guys, DJ |

Its a simple RC servo. You can find them at any hobby store. If you don't have any experience with electronics don't try to modify it. If you do its a simple fix. There are a few options. The simplestis to remove the trimpot inside and connect the power source directly to the motor. Then its simply power on or off to control it.
The servo is geared down to a very low speed to give it more strength. This speed sounds like what you want. It'll also pull a decent weight. Best, Tim |

Couldn't you modify a stealth retractor for something like this? Just a thought.

What you want is the hummingbird reel by John Kennedy. The stealth retractor is more for close up, lighter objects. Hmngbrd reel will do just what you want but is a little pricey and can get tangled, etc. As a replacement I've used these cheap dollar bill snatchers rubberbanded/taped inside my vist. You do have to watch lighting as the nylon is more visible, or conceal it behind your arm as it retracts. Won't give you the control of a motorized reel though...

DJ,
What you need is a micro geared motor. It is less than an inch long and 3/8 of an inch thick. It fits easily in a small matchbox. Speed depends on the battery voltage you assign. Perhaps you can find it in those old small cameras which rewind automatically. I bought mine in Mongkok, Hong Kong in a flea market there. There are several to choose from. I use it for my Jumbo Rising Cards.

Lou,
Do you have any idea where I could find one of these in Las Vegas? Would a camera store be a good place to start? Thanks again everyone for your help, it means a lot! DJ |
