Shh!
Don't talk about Tarbell - usually when you do an effect from the series everyone looks at you wondering where you got the idea / effect from. I think the series is really the heart of my library and the books that I use the most. One thing that I really like about this series is that I find it easier to come up with my own unique routines compared to reading more modern books. Perhaps it's the style and date that the effects were written, I'm not sure.

I, too, learned magic from this series. I grew up in the little town of Walla Walla, Washington and every summer my family would vacation in Seattle. During the vacation I would drag my dad down to Sid Brockman's magic shop and buy another volume in the series. The third year I splurged and bought volumes 3 and 4 together. There were no magicians in Walla Walla, so Harlan Tarbell was my magical mentor.
My favorite volumes are 3 and 4, but I really like all of them. I, too, have heard modern magi say, "Wow, where did that come from," while saying to myself, "ah, another trick from Tarbell". Even when the trick itself isn't from Tarbell I will recognize the method as one that was taught there. That being said, there are some things missing that I would have liked to seen. There is little on cups and balls, for example. He seemed to avoid a lot of classics unless there was some unique presentation. |

I can't pick a favorite. I actually hvae had this discussion a number of times over the years, but the truth is, whatever volume I pick up becomes my favorite.

I just found volumes 1, 2, and 3 in an antique store in New Orleans. They appear to be third prints, from the 1940's. Score!!!
I am also a volume 4 guy. Razors and light boxes and photo albums, oh my!! Cheers!!!

Question: I have a complete set of Tarbell's from some 30 years ago. Have they changed at all since? Just wondering if I should look into updating...
Some think Houdini used trap doors in his act, but he was just going through a stage.

If someone put it out on DVD it would be a good and bad for everyone interested in magic.....but clips of all magic would then be on the internet enough to make Tarbell, and Vernon roll in their grave. I would prefer it to remain in books then you have to look at black and white ink....oh ya it's called READING magic. Most then would leave the little gems alone or not even know about them. Most peeps in magic today don't even realize whats in the volumes because they don't read..." I need to watch to learn" is what I hear all the time in my Magic shop. That's good for Magic in a weird way. Peeps today think E or penguin has come out with something new on DVD, when in fact it's been in magic already for years.
Magically yours,

A great way to work through the course is to pick up a copy of the "Tarbell Study Guide" by Steve Burton. You'll need all 8 volumes of the course as well as Burton's "Tarbell Companion" as well. The Guide and Companion are available (I think!) through http://www.magicbooksbypost.co.uk.

When I was a kid ( a while ago!) my local library in Elmhurst IL had the first 6 volumes on their shelves!!! Needless to say, they spent more time at my house than the library. What a joy for a 10 year old! Now it's nice to have my own set.

A local magician here told me a story recently, in that he at one point in time ran into spectator that told him that her grandfather was a magician although that he would prolly never have heard of him. when he ask his name, she replied Harlen tarbell. cracks me up, how true it is I don't know, but I know the guy pretty well.

Good morning.
I just recently purchased the entire set off of E-Bay. It's a first edition, first printing. It has been bound into 10 volumes. From reading the begining, it looks as though these typed out pages were sent by mail a lesson at a time. I find it amazing that every page is there. I had a few volumes back in the early 1970's when I first started to learn magic. Those were newer editions and got destroyed in a flood. When I saw this on Ebay I decided it would be nice read through this again. It's every bit as good as I remembered it to be. JPK

Tarbell is the best! I too get more from this series than most any other book on magic. The only thing close for me is Bobo's "Modern Coin magic" (I am a coin guy).
JPK the set you bought is set up much differently than the books. The books (1-6) took the set and reorganized it, took some things out and added some items. Books 7 was a index for all the books 1-7 (painstaking work, two thumbs up Harry)with some new effects and principles from when the books were completed with volume 6. Volume 8 gave us the history behind the series and included much of the material that was lost when the lessons were made into the books. I also think that Steve Burton's "Tarbell Study Guide" and "The Tarbell Companion" are must haves if you have the whole set of books. Regards, M

Good afternoon Mark.
Thanks for the info on this set I got. I didn't rally know much about the way these lessons were originlally released. Like I said, I had a few volumes of the book back in the 70's but they were ruined in a flood. For the age of this set, they are very nice shape. JPK I will check out the other books you mention. The index in the set I have is in the begining.

JPK,
The index in volume 7, would do you no good for your set of Tarbell. The Books are arranged completely differently, I would recommend you to buy Volume 8, of the current book set as it will give you some good information on the selling of the original "Tarbell System" as you have. As I understand it, your lessons are better organized into a "progressive" learning format. It has been a while since I saw a copy of the original Tarbell. The books are again, much different. You have a neat and very useful piece of magic history!! Regards, m "One more step on the pathway of Knowledge, that is if we don't break our leg crossing the street"
